RIDAY 9 Glasgow
I Carol Laula The Shelter, 7 Renfrew Court. Renfrew Chambers. 332 6231. Winning the Glasgow Song for the City of Culture and starring in the subsequent Hogmanay George Square party has heightened interest in this talented singer/songwriter. The small venue should suit her to a tee.
I Scream She Said Buchanan Lounge Bar. 185 Buchanan Street. 332 7284. Free. The first gig at ‘the Bucky‘ by any band.
I Slave Trade Studio. 12 Shuttle Street, Paisley, 889 6867.
I The Light Clyde Cavern, Clyde Place.
Edinburgh
I The Right Sttlll Venue, Calton Road . 557 3073. Arista‘s current great white hopes, but will the kids go for the slick. manufactured feel that makes the new single ‘The Girl‘s All Go‘ sound like an act of desperation?
I DC Ellis Heriot Watt Student Union, Grindlay Street. 8pm. £2.50. Weekend ticket. valid for Sat 10 as well,£4.50. Students and guests only. The eight-piece band‘s go-go sound has expanded to encompass more diverse areas of funk than previously. An impressive figure and a fine mimic. Dave Ellis’s exhortations to 'git down. y‘all‘ can get wearing.
I Thee Variitose Veins and Bulkhead Basin Street. Haymarket, 3371006. 8pm—midnight. The Veins make a deep and growly noise - not for the fainthearted, who should maybe dip into their Beirut Everywhere LP (Chrome) before going along. Bulkhead have a fabby name.
I Silent Falls Edinburgh University Student Union, Teviot Row. 667 2091. Students and guests only. Silent Falls happened to slap their worst track , an awful example of a guitar band tryingto ape New Order's choppy electronics. at the very start of their six-song tape, but they've got much better on offer. Sort of rock that attracts words like ‘moody' and ‘swirling‘.
I The Lords oi Flatbush Negociants, Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.45pm. Free. I Tour de Force Preservation Hall, Victoria Street. 226 3816. £1 after 9pm.
I Blueilnger Southside Snooker Club, 72 Causewayside. 9pm—midnight. Free. Experienced rock‘n‘roll-influenced band. with a number of residencies under their belt. On a good night can pull quite a crowd.
SATURDAY 10 Glasgow
I Tanita Tiltaram SECC . Finnieston Quay. 248 3000. See Preview
I The Oulreboys Mayfair. 474 Sauchiehall Street. 332 3872. Blighty's answer to dear old Guns‘n‘Roses (right down to the neo-gipsy image and one member with daft hat). check out Glasgow on the back ofthc first chart hit ‘Hey You‘.
I Martln Stephenson King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. 272 St Vincent Street, 221 5279. Martin has been extremely unlucky in his career. watching contemporaries such as Prefab Sprout and Aztec Camera climb the charts. but success never seems to have got around to him. if critical acclaim counts for anything though, he could pack it in right now and retire.
I Brooks at Blackfriars. 36 Bell Street.552 5924. Free. J azz-influe nced songs sung by Lorna Brooks. mainly acoustic, but with occasional washes of synth for atmosphere. Dare i say, over-25$ stuff?
BOOK
I The Butter Mountaln Boys Paisley Arts Centre, New Street, Paisley, 8871010. Award-winning bluegrass band, veterans of many a radio and TV session.
Edinburgh
I Big Blue Sea and The Lost Soul Band Heriot Watt Student Union, Grindlay Street. 8pm. £3. Weekend ticket, valid for Fri 9 as well. £4.50.
I The .10 Flint Band Negociants, Lothian Street, 225 6313. 9.45pm. Free.
I Head in the Sand Kasbar, The Cowgate. Playing a lot of gigs at the moment, and building up a name for tight, exciting sets. I The Rivals Preservation Hall, Victoria Street. 226 3816. £1 after9pm.
I Live music Globe, West Port, 229 4553. Free.
SUNDAY 11 Glasgow
I Lost Rooftops. 92 Sauchiehall Street, 332 5833. £2. Another Delirium 7 gig which seem to be proving popular with the indie psychedelic kids.
I Tantara Blade and The Lezll Robertson Band Videodrome , 33—39 York Street. 221 0441. Free. Tantara Blade have been working live and in the studio for quite some time now, with a fairly pleasant sound, but without producing anything really outstanding yet. Lezli, a keyboard
player for Hue and Cry, has afive-piece
band which includes guest saxophonist Phil Bancroft from The John Rae Collective.
I Hugh Reed and the Velvet Underpants Minstrels. Broomielaw, 204 3698. If you haven't heard the ‘Panties’ cult fave ‘Six to Wan‘. now‘s the time. Others in their repertoire have a less durable novelty appeal
Edinburgh
I The Great Junction Street Band Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 226 3816. £1 after 9pm. Quality mainstream melodic soft rock, served up by a talented pool of musicians. but lacking real bite.
I The Liquidators Negociants, Lothian Street, 225 6313. 9.45pm. Free.
I Hiptroniits L‘Odeon, George [V Bridge, 225 1681. Free. Charged-up soulcovers with original material.
I Head in the Send Kasbar, The Cowgate. See Sat 10.

MONDAY12 Glasgow
I The Right Sttlll King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut, 272 St Vincent Street, 2215279. Their new album is suitably entitled
Wa- Wa. and this gig coincides with the release of their new single ‘The Girl's All Go‘.
I Zoot and the Roots Studio, lzshuttic Street. Paisley. 8896867.
Edinburgh
I Birdland Network. West Toiicross. Birdland's following has been built up more by their punishing 120mph gigs (admittedly exciting and fun) than their rather ordinary buzzsaw singles. and although everything about them is seriously contrived. their energy, and the young kids crowding the front rows imagining they‘re at the Roxy in ‘77. gives quite a rush. Fears that the venue will be trashed tonight should probably be restricted to the stage.
I Ruth Ellis. The Radlum Cats and The Wenoys Venue, Calton Road. 557 3073. 9pm. Minimum £2.50 donation. A benefit for orphans and other children of Romania. The bands will be raising money for urgently needed medical supplies. and one or two may be going across to Bucharest to be the first Western bands. the organisers claim. to play in Ceacescu‘s
enormous and hideously expensive palace.
I Larry Johnson Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 226 3816. New York-based blues singer.
I The Reiugees Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.45pm. Free. Country and blues group fronted by Fjaere Nilssen.
TUESDAY 13
Glasgow
I Van Morrison SECC . Finnieston Quay. 248 3000. Will chart success have gone to his head? Will Cliff be making a guest appearance? Probably not. but it‘s nice to see Van touring fairly frequently up here. Reports of his last Pavilion gig. not many months ago, were ecstatic. Gee.
I Bartry Barlry and Excellent Rain Minstrels. Broomielaw, 204 3698. Apparently. and they may have remedied the situation by now. the two Barky Boys play with drum machine and electronic backing. which is a tricky business to get right, but I‘d hate to think it would blunt some of the grungey and invigorating tracks on their tape. At least they don‘t take themselves too seriously. Excellent Rain. as they have no qualms about telling people that this is the case, used to be Swing Shift.
I The Whole Earth Napoleons. 128 Merrytee Road. 637 5239.
I Running Scared Studio. 12 Shuttle Street. Paisley. 8896867.
I Live MUSIC Fixx, 86 Miller Street. 248 2859.
I Glasgow Songwriters Co-operative Blackfriars. 45 Albion Street. 552 5924. 7.30pm. Free. All songwriters, in any styles. welcome.
Edinburgh
I The Roolsie Tootsie Band Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 226 3816. 9.30pm. Free. Residency. Rockin‘ blues.
I Savana Lamar Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.45pm. Free. Spanish pop group with a Latin feel. settled in Scotland.
I Los Supremos St James Oyster Bar. Calton Road. 557 2925. 9pm. Free. Wide range of covers from blues-based band.
WEDNESDAY 14 Glasgow
I The Rose Thieves Fixx, 86 Miller Street, 248 2859. More aspiring local popsters, currently recording a new demo — ‘Didl Say Love‘ from the last one topped the Saints and Sinners demo disco for a fortnight. The drum seat. incidentally. is filled by former Mind Kenny Hysiop.
I Blue October The Shelter. 7 Renfrew Court. Renfrew Chambers. 3326231.
I Thin Red Line Minstrels. Broomielaw, 204 3698.
I Big Vern 6 The Shooters Studio. 12 Shuttle Street. Paisley. 889 6867.
I The Hicks Clyde Cavern. Clyde Place.
Edinburgh
I Fini Tribe Wilkie llouse.Cowgate. Edinburgh‘s ‘dancefloor therapists‘ (yes. we like that one) play a hometown show to promote their new LP of subversion. Crossing 10k. We‘re promised a more theatrical Tribe. with less of the pretension and more of the humour.
I The Macc Lads' Private Party Venue. Calton Road, 557 3073. The implication being that if you really want to go. you‘ll know the people to get a ticket from.
I Last Minute Kasbar. The Cowgate. See panel
I lrah Hayes and A Boy Called Bob Finsbury Park. South St Andrew Street. 556 1020. A Boy Called Bob we can‘t enlighten you too much about. but lrah Hayes isfronted by the resonant voice of Lucy Johnstone. Sets of skilful mainly acoustic songs. of which ‘Waik the Dog‘ and 'Waiis‘ eome particularly recommended.
I The Rivals Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.45pm. Free.
