When I Fall in Love (15) (Taylor Hackford, US, 1988) Dennis Ouaid, Jessica Lange, Timothy Hutton, John Goodman. Twenty five years In the life of a sports hero. In Louisana college football Gavin Grey (Duaid) is the king of the field. It’s1958, and love, friendship and sporting excellence are the most natural things in the world. Gavin’s closest friend is his fellow-player Lawrence (Goodman), his most ardent admirer is his cousin ‘Cake’ (Hutton), and his girl is none other than the year's Magnolia Dueen, Dabs (Lange). Everything is colourful, healthy and uncomplicated, but gradually Gavin has to face up to the prospect oi bowing out from the only activity which defines what he is. Loaded up with regulation golden oldies and complete with a don’t-speak-much bit part for Aaron Neville, this is an interesting film but not quite interesting enough. So far as playing 21 year-olds is concerned, both Ouaid and Lange are well past their sell-by dates, but that’s quite forgivable given that the film eventually takes them through to middle age and 1981. Hackford’s reluctance to square up properly to the movie’s implicit big issue: just what does an All Time Great player do when the final whistle blows? Gavin goes into selling artificial turf, discovers that he’s bankrupt and ends up fronting a restaurant and telling the same old big match stories over and over again. This brings solid lntimatlons of the dangers oi living fast but not managing to die young which Duaid’s fulsomely shallow persona and ready grin are well up to.

Comparing the movie’s original US title ‘Everybody’s All American’ with its romantic renaming here, points to its fundamental confusion of aims. While the fact that it bombed out heavily in the States in 1988 is further proof that box office Hollywood will always celebrate ratherthan even half analyse the myths oi making it big. For that half here maybe we should be grateful. This is a film lull of both gulf and line moments. (Tom Tunney)

I Willow (PG) (Ron Howard, US, 1988) Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley, Jean Marsh. 126 mins. A mystery baby turns up in the land of the little Nelwyn people, and one of their number has to return it to the adult-sized land of the Daikini, but the kid turns outto be someone special. Would-be blockbusting fairtytale epic offers producer George Lucas an opportunity to refashion Star Wars in a setting straight from Tolkien. The result is not unentertaining, but we’ve seen it too many times before. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I A Winter Tan ( 18) (Canada, 1987) Jackie Burroughs, Erando Gonzalez. 91 mins. A sexual monologue with an extraordinary performance from Burroughs as American authoress Maryse Holder abandoning herself to the pursuit of pleasure in the form of numerous Mexican genitalia. Some kind of meditation may be

going on about the nature of desire or on the other hand she's just having a few bonks over the border. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I The Witches of Eastwick ( 18) (George Miller, US. 1987) Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon. 118 mins. Suffocatingin the prim tranquility of a small town in New England, three single women set their collective sights on conjuring up the perfect Mr Right. Next morninga mysterious stranger suddenly appears, as if in answer to their prayers, and begins to charm the pants off them. But the ripe, randy and rakish Daryl van Horne isthe devil in disguise, and there is a price to pay for their pleasure. A joyous. diabolical romp, with Nicholson having the time of his life. Glasgow: GET.

I Withnail 81 l (15) (Bruce Robinson, UK. 1987) Paul McGann, Richard E. Grant. Richard Grifﬁths. 107 mins. Two out-of-work actors surviving 1969 London giro squalor take a break in a picturesque Lake District cottage, where one of them suffers the attentions of the ageing homosexual owner. Reasonably entertaining British comedy with a tendency to rely on the all-too-easy targets of drug-taking and gay stereotyping for its humour. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
