PREMIER LEAGUE
I Hibernian v Motherwell Easter Road Stadium, Albion Road, Edinburgh, 3pm. Having recently scored an important away victory against Motherwell in a rearranged fixture which was played a couple of weeks ago, I libs must be confident of repeating the exercise, even if their home form has been appalling in the last couple of months. However, for a team who seem to prefer playing as far away from their home support as possible, prior to the Cup match against Brechin they had not scored a goal in aSaturday away match since last season. When? Answers on a postcard.
I Dunfermline V SI Mirren East End Park, Halbeath Road, Dunfermline, 3pm. Again, a recent rearranged fixture between these two suggests a St Mirren victory. which, if it was to happen, could place Dunfermline in the second-to-last spot in the league and not too many points ahead of Dundee (who are at home to Celtic today).
I Rangers v Dundee United lbrox stadium, Glasgow (2 mins lbrox underground), 3pm. All of a sudden. United are being tipped as king-makers. with an ability to steal points offthe title challengers.
FIRST DIVISION
I Ayr United v Partick Thistle Somerset Park, Ayr, 3pm. Didn‘t this column say, ages ago, that misgivings were beginning to surface amongst the Thistle support suggesting that Sandy Clark was not the right man for the job as manager ofthe team? With defeats becoming a regular feature of the Jags season, it would seem that his position at the club is already becoming untenable, though it would be outrageous if the board were to consider giving him the sack at such an early stage of his tenure.
IAlbion Roversv Falkirk Cliftonhill Park, Coatbridge (10 mins Coatdyke station), 3pm.
I Clyde V Airdrie Firhill Park, Maryhill, Glasgow (from Hope Street, buses nos 60, 61 and 66),3pm.

HOCKEY Saturday 27
I Women's indoor Club Championship Bell‘s Sports Centre, Hay Street, Perth, l0am. After the success of this year's Glenfiddich Tournament, where Dundee‘s NMP Menzieshill narrowly lost, 7-6, to defending champions, Club An Der Alsterm from Hamburg, this event should be welcomed by recent converts to the game. The tournament will be organised on a league basis, and, as usual, the participants have been selected as district representatives. Although defending

OFF THE BAR
Brewers’ money flows into football these days as swiftly as their products pour in (and out) of the punters. The result, to deftly use a footballing phrase, is that some trophy cabinets have begun to resemble drinks cabinets. The Skol Cup, the Bells' Manager of the Month Award and the Tennents’ Scottish Cup are all on offer. Some teams of course, are on the wagon.
The next collusion between brewery sponsorship and Scottish football will be the seventh Tennents' Sixes, 28 and 29 January at the SECC. Though often regarded as the Des O’Connor of the Football season - lightly diverting but of no real import, the beer boys have poured £130,000 oi prize-money into if. Hence, all ten Premier League clubs will again participate. Last year’s winners Rangers along with Ribs, St Mirren and the two Dundee sides form group one; playing each other on the afternoon of Sunday 28. The other five Premier League teams will battle it out that evening with the top two teams

stages the following evening.
Although the clubs involved tend to field, or ratherfloor, a mixed pool of first team players and lesser known faces, they play with the enthusiasm if not the ‘total commitment’ of a Souness challenge. The audience too will be enthusiastic if not passionate. Tickets for the tournament are currently selling out faster than for a ferry leaving Beirut. Meanwhile, the armchair punters will be hoping to toast the kind of flowing footy that keeps Jock Brown searching for synonyms of ‘marvellous'. ICE HOCKEY Tuesday 30
CAPITAL FOODS SCOTTISH LEAGUE I Ayr Raiders v Murrayfield Racers Murrayfield Ice Rink, Riversdaie Crescent, Edinburgh, 8pm. Because Ayr couldn't find ice, this match has had to be switched to Edinburgh. The Raiders should be playing Keith Gretzky, whose brother, Wayne, is reputed to be the highest-paid sportsman in the world and is readily acknowledged to be the world‘s most accomplished ice hockey player. While Wayne plays for the Los Angeles Kings, bought for 36m from the Edmonton Oilers, Keith has come to Scotland to fill in for the injured Danny Shea. Despite being jet-lagged and beleaguered by a considerable amount of press attention (including a TV crew from
Canada), he made a very favourable impression in his debut match, against Peterborough Pirates. In comparison to Shea, Gretzky has already shown himself to be a much more direct player, alwayson the lookout for a goal-scoring opportunity.

I Murrayfield Racers v Whitley Warriors Murrayfield Ice Rink, Riversdaie Crescent, Edinburgh, 6.30pm.
Saturday 3
I Fife Flyers v Durham Wasps Kirkcaldy Ice Rink, 7.15pm.
I Ayr Raiders v Nottingham Panthers Ayr Ice Rink, Limekilns Road, Ayr, 7pm. With Gretzky now established in the ranks, Ayr‘s hopes of finishing in the top six ofthe league, and therefore qualifying for the play~offs which take place in April. seem a good deal more likely.

I Scottish Kendo Championships Burnhill Sports Centre, Toryglen Road, Rutherglen, Glasgow, 2pm. Kendo— the way of the sword — is the ancient fencing style of the Japanese Samuri , and although it is not nearly as popular as many other martial arts, there are five clubs who teach this venerable practice.

Broomfield Road. Glasgow. noon. See DaneL
NETBALL Saturday 3
I Home International Kelvin Hall. Argyle Street, Glasgow, 12.30pm, £5(£3). The annual clash between Scotland and England. in this case involving the U-21 and senior sides, sees Scotland looking for revenge in a sport which the English have dominated the fixture for years. The last time netball received any sort ofmajor coverage by the media was in 1987, when Crownpoint, Glasgow, hosted a World Tournament, where Scotland finished joint 9th and England 4th, and it is perhaps time for interest in the sport to pick up again. However, the failure oflast year‘s pilot National League has not helped improve the sport‘s profile, with the return ofthe District Leagues perhaps perpetuating limited ambitions. Ofall the Districts, Glasgow‘s is the strongest . with Scotstoun and St Margaret Mary‘s the dominant teams.
RUGBY
Scotland‘s participation in Five Nations Championship kicks-off with a match against Ireland in Dublin on Saturday 3, with the Scots confident that they could figure highly in the final placings. Despite one or two concerns about the fitness of the front row, excepting prop, David Sole, of course, the Scots‘ pack looks set to win a lot of ball for the backs from both the set-piece and the loose.
