Prints Irom Scottish Art Colleges at the Prlntmakers Workshop, Edinburgh
In recent years energy has been put into promoting and encouraging student work-with both public and dealers ilocking to the degree shows - which I Ieel is a mixed blessing.
The Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop are currently having its third exhibition at prints by students lrom all lour Scottish art colleges. It is
encouraging to see this approach being pursued. Overall somewhat dark and melancholic — rellectlng the trend lor which the northern schools already have a reputation—there are however many highlights and some competent work.
Etchings abound, and the popularity ol the colograph (an imitation ol the lormer. though narrower in scope) ls evident. Notable are a very strong head by Agneta Diorkland, and John Macdonald's striking Price Metal, a large piece which achieves both space and depth; I also liked Jonathan Cassels’ Heroes and Villains (all three students lrom Glasgow). Fiona Dick (Aberdeen) is showing two evocative and unusual mixed media works, in which the colours have the vibrancy ol stained-glass windows. It would have been good to see a bit more colour In the exhibition as a whole.
Suprislngly there Is only one monoprlnt, Stagnate, an expressive monochromatic piece by Jackie Conolly (Dundee). It would be interesting to see her develop the technique more substantially. (Paula Garcia Stone)
