Though the prelude to this year’s Commonwealth Games has been less than encouraging, ‘The Friendly Games’ tag still has some mileage as we warm-up to what promises to be a tortnight at high quality sporting achievement.

Certainly, preparations tor the Games—starting in Auckland on the 24th - have not been trouble lree. Alter

the boycotts in Edinburgh in 1986 the Black Alrican nations have persistently threatened to withdraw again and there have been many organisational and Iinancial irregularities.

Even in Scotland, the build-up lorthe trip to New Zealand has been

conducted amidst acrimony. Some places in the squad were restricted to those athletes able to satist very strict qualilication standards a practice not adopted by any other nation. The result is that the English athletic squad is biggerthan Scotland’s entire team. Nonetheless, there are a number 01 medal hopes amongst the Scottish contingent. Few, however, are likelyto mine Gold. Yvonne Murray (in the 3,000m on Sunday 28) or Liz McColgan (in the 10,000m) should give cause lor celebration, but Tom Meltean will have a tough time in the 800m (on Thursday 1) when he will have to see all Kenya’s Billy Konchellah and Paul Ereng, and England’s evergreen Sebastian Coe. Dvershorter distances, Brian Whittle, Elliott Bunney and Jamie Henderson lace Lyntord Christie, John

Regis and Marcus Adam, all in lorm and competing tor England. The 100m tinal is on Sunday 28.

In other events, expect medals in bowls (Wednesday 31), shooting and cycling (the men’s IDDDm linal is on Saturday 27). But as the old saying goes, winning is less important than taking part, a sentiment dear to J. Astley Cooper, creator ol the Games. With that in mind, I'll be rooting lor the competitors lrom the lar-llung Norfolk Islands and the Guernsey sweaters. (Mike Wilson)
