ANNUAL TURN(ER)OVER
Turner’s Watercolours, National Gallery, Edinburgh. January.
The son at a wealthy hatmaker, Henry Vaughan amassed a sizeable number 01 watercolours by Turner (1775-1851). When he died in 1899 he Ieit them to national collections-the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum in London, and the National Galleries in Dublin and Edinburgh. The stipulation was that they should only be on display in January to protect vulnerable pigments irom over-exposure to light; the result is that each year we have the chance to see some oi the best-preserved oi Turner's watercolours, spanning his whole working lite.
Turner visited Venice in 1819, 1833 and 1840, and had himseli rowed up and down the canals, scribbling iurlously. The resultant works, romantic and misty, still influence how Venice is painted and photographed today— very different irom Canaletto’s
crisp delineation oi the previous century. John Ruskin, a staunch supporter of Turner, nevertheless alter his own exhaustive survey Stones oi Venice was published and criticised ior demythologising the city, said that he would only have needed three weeks there to do in words what Turner did in paint. Judge tor yourself irom the works on show here. Certainly, Turner’s portrayal oi the Alps and the Rhone valley are less to do with topography than his conception oi the sublime.
To an extent this is true of works irom Turner’s visits to Scotland in 1801 and 1831. The 20 works for an edition of Thomas Campbell’s poems are more illustrative -smaII vignettes in meticulous pure colour tor engravers to copy- as is the 1819 watercolour oi the Bell Rock Lighthouse, in a grand Turnerian storm, but at more local than artistic interest.
