FILM LIST
writer Dennis Potter. Coming from these two major talents. this is a profound disappointment. Edinburgh: Filmhousc. I Turner and Hooch (PG) or (Roger Spottiswoodc. US. 1989) Tom Hanks. Beazley. Mare Winningham. 108 mins. See review. Glasgow: Cannon The Forge. Odcon. Salon. Edinburgh: Odcon. Central: Allanpark. Caledonian, Cannon. Strathclyde: Cannon. Kelburne, Odcon Ayr. Odeon Hamilton. La Scala, UCI Clydebank. UCI East Kilbride. WMR Film Centre.
I Twelve Angry Men (PG) (Sydney Lumet. US. 1957) Henry Fonda. Lee J Cobb, Ed Begley. Jack Klugman. 95 mins. One man stands out against his fellowjurors' somewhat prejudiced view of the murder case they are trying. The battle is consistently tense and sweaty as Fonda struggles to convince the other eleven that the accused is innocent until proven guilty. Edinburgh University Film Society.
I The Unbearable Lightness of Being ( 18) (Philip Kaufman. US. 1987) Daniel Day-Lewis. Juliette Binoche. Lena Olin. 167 mins. Ambitious adaptation ofMilan Kundera‘s elliptical. complex novel about a womanising Czech brain surgeon who falls in love for the first time with a doe-like beauty from a small spa town. Abandoning his freewheeling former existence, he faces commitment and togetherness at the time ofthe Prague Spring and Russian invasion of 1968. A dawdling and rather austere narrative is given some spice and interest by an overwhelming eroticism. a beautifully judged evocation of Prague and gorgeous photography, otherwise vastly overlong and uninvolving. Edinburgh: Filmhousc. I Venus Peter ( 12) (Ian Sellar.UK,1989) Ray McAnally. Gordon R. Strachan, David Hayman. 92 mins. Affecting adaptation shot on Orkney of Scots writer Christopher Rush‘s impressionisticA Twelvemonth And/1 Day, set in a fishing village in the 1950s. One of McAnally's last roles casts him beautifully as the sympathetic grandfather of Peter, played by nine-year-old Strachan (who is not to be confused with the diminutive Scottish midfield genius) in this moving study ofa dying community seen through the eyes of a young boy. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I We Think The World ol You (PG) (Colin Gregg. UK, 1988) Alan Bates. Gary Oldman. Francis Barber. Betsy the dog. 91 mins. London in the socially repressive Fifties. Bates is a respectable, middle-aged bachelor. who tries to cope with the down-slope of his relationship with disreputable youthful type Johnny, by transferring his confused affections to the Iatter‘s unkempt dog Evie. Well acted but eccentric menage a trots from the novel byJ.R. Ackerley. Edinburgh: Filmhousc. I When Harry Met Sally ( 15) (Rob Reiner, US. 1989) Billy Crystal. Meg Ryan. Carrie Fisher. 95 mins. Thoughtful sex comedy has Crystal (Harry), Ryan (Sally) and Reiner on top form. with highly entertaining results. Nora Ephron‘s witty
screenplay intelligently ponders the possibility of male/female friendship with or without romance, and guess which side wins. . . Annie Hall for the late 19805. with now-famous faked orgasm. Glasgow: Cannon The Forge, Odcon, Grosvenor. Edinburgh: Odcon. Central: Cannon. Strathclyde: Odcon Hamilton, UCI Clydebank, UCl East Kilbride.
I While Mischief (18) (Mike Radford. UK/US. 1987) Greta Seacchi. Charles Dance, Joss Ackland. 107 mins. Kenya, 1941. Sir Jock Delves Broughton shoots his wife's lover, Lord Errol, and is acquitted by the colonial court. Resolutely dreary African sexual shenanigans, lackadaisically acted and dreadfully slow, which manages to make what sounds like quite intriguing source material into a cold and lumpy pudding of a movie. Glasgow: Grosvenor.
I Wild Flowers (15) a (Robert Smith, UK, 1989) Colette O‘Neil, Beatie Edney, Sheila Keith. 66 mins. See feature. Glasgow: GFT.
I Women On The Verge 01 A Nervous Breakdown (15) (Pedro Almodovar, Spain, 1988) Carmen Maura, Antonio Banderas, Julieta Serrano. 98 mins. When Pepa’s illicit affair with an older man is abruptly terminated, she sets out for revenge, but is distracted by a succession of offbeat visitors seeking her calming influence. A splendidly bizarre character comedy from the maker of Law OfDesire, with some off-the-wall acting and a plot that pays ironic but affectionate homage to the classic Hollywood comedies of the 19505. Edinburgh University Film Society.
I Working Girl (15) (Mike Nichols, US, 1988) Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Cusack. 114 mins. Bitchy boss Weaver teaches her secretary (Griffith) the art of self-confidence so well that when she gets laid up the working girl takes her place, tackles the financial world head-on and romances Ford into the bargain. Supremely entertaining escapist fluffthat takes the old Frank Capra routine and gives it a contemporary sheen. The cast has a field day, notably Ms Griffith, who gets away with lines like ‘l‘ve got a head for business and a bod for sin‘. Edinburgh: Filmhousc.
I Yoiimbo (15) (Akira Kurosawa,Japan, 1961 ) Toshiro Mifune, Eijiro Tono, Kamatari Fujiwara. 110 mins. Mifune‘s unheroic and lazy samurai sells his services to two rival factions in a small town and then sits back to watch them destroy each other. Darkly comic exercise in Japanese violence which later served as a blueprint for Sergio Leone‘s ForA Few Dollars More. Edinburgh: Film Guild.
I Young Frankenstein (15) (Mel Brooks, US, 1974) Gene Wilder, Gene Hackman, Peter Boyle. 108 mins. A splendidly accurate James Whale pastiche choc-full of memorable one-liners and crazee situations. Brooks‘ most affectionate and consistently humorous film. Glasgow: Grosvenor.
