The Land at Narnia Brian Sibley (Collins Lions, 28.96)
For the ‘Narnla' tan who has read ragged the books. listened to the cassette tapes while pinning a map at Narnia on the bedroom wall. watched and videoed the lirst television serial and ls currently demanding television viewing rights each Sunday tea time, here's another Item lor the collection. The Land at Narnia (suitable ior older children) by Brian Sibley is a guide to Narnia, explaining how the stories came to be written and their hidden meanings. A short illustrated biography oi CS. Lewis (known to triends and iamiiy as Jack) gives us details oi his childhood and tile up until he decided to write books lor children. Artist Pauline Baynes was the original illustrator oi the seven books which make up the Chronicles, and she has now re-created some scenes in colour. Back in the Fiitles she made the several hundred black and white drawings which decorate each page. Illustrations from other children’s classics read by Jack the lad also ieature though he may not have been inspired by them. Asked why he wrote books ior children he said, ‘People won‘t write the books I want, so I have

This is a wondertul engrossing book. Adults who read the novels when they were known as The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, without the rest at the merchandising paraphernalia. will enjoy stepping through the wardrobe and back in time.
