While some Highland and Borderteams have receiv ed byes into the Second Round. accompanied by five Second Division sides. The Highland League will be represented in the First Round by Elgin ('ity (at home to Arbroath) and Cove Rangers (away to Queen ofthe South). while ('oldstream fly the flag for the Borders. away to Stirling Albion at an alternative to their plastic pitch at Annfield: Recreation Park. Alloa. Allties are scheduled for 2. 15pm. but should floodlighting be available. then there is the option to commence the games at a time which is mutually convenient (between the teams. not the teams and the handful of fans). The Scottish Senior Indoor Championships will provide one ortwo of Scotland’s accomplished athletes with a final opportunity to qualify for the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, which begin on 24 January. A special set of indoor qualifying standards have been set by the Commonwealth Games committee and at least three competitors in this year’s championship— Neil Fraser, Joss Kirby and Dawn Kitchen — hope to join the (controversially) small group of athletes who are already confirmed for New Zealand. However, to do so, they will have to perform exceptionally well, since most ofthe indoor standards are more difficult than current Scottish records.
For the chance to achieve the necessary standards, thanks must be given to the Scottish Schools Athletic Association since it was they who were scheduled to use the venue over the 9th and 10th of the month, with the Scottish AmateurAthletic Association left out in the cold because of work on a 5th lane to the Kelvin Hall for next year's European Indoor Championships. Therefore, the 3rd indoor championships at Kelvin Hall go ahead courtesy of the SSAA.

Also in attendance will be Brian Whittle, perhaps better known as a 400m runner but competing in Auckland at 800m, who was recently ordered to declare a single loyalty between two clubs he runs for, Ayr Seaforth and Haringey. Earlier in the year, Whittle was controversially

involved in articulating complaints that the Commonwealth Games athletics squad was insufficient, threatening to boycott the games altogether. Although his threat did not come to anything, perhaps the message was partially heeded by the authorities, since they expanded the squad by two men and two women, including Nicola Emblem (who is also a basketball player of considerable talent), and of course an (admittedly slim) opportunityto qualify is still being made available.
Nonetheless, it remains that Scotland was the only country to demand qualifying standards and that England will be taking with them an athletics squad (with three athletes for each event) which will be larger than the whole of the Scottish Commonwealth team put together.
On an even less happy note, Jayne Barnetson has had to leave the squad of twelve women as a result of an injury incurred at the inaugural indoor meet at Bathgate a few weeks ago. Jayne is currently ranked 2nd in the Commonwealth for the High Jump, with 1.91m to her credit, and 4th in the Commonwealth for the Heptathlon, with 5803 points. (Mike Wilson)
