Fionna Carlisle, 369 Gallery. Fionna Carlisle’s work brings Greek sunshine to the darkness of the Cowgate with swirling gesture and bright colour in her observations of people and their relationships. Her work is in the tradition of the Scottish colourists, with references to turn of the century painting, and sitting easily in the framework provided by the 369 for contemporary artists who are developing thattradition today.
Because the tradition in which she works is one with which we are familiar, the exhibition invites the viewer to enjoy, rather than offering challenges. As a strategy this can be problematic: one or two of the works, although recent, now seem dated, and the potential for pushing subject matter as far as possible is sometimes

missed. Theresa’s Place, for instance,
has bypassed the debate instigated by black artists in the Seventies about the
representation of black people in artworks as exotic and decorative.
Similar issues arise with her portrayal
of prostitutes. Now, Carlisle’s paintings are themselves exotic and decorative; it would be interesting to see her re-establish some form of
critical distance and tension between
her subject matter and her style.
The catalogue makes the mistake of
indirectly comparing her with Jane
Austin and Mozart; apart from the problems of landing that on a young
artist, both those artists’ works are far
more classical in temperament and more measured than Carlisle‘s
romantic bent and restless structures.
