Edinburgh Puppet Company. Puppetry, and particularly children's puppetry, is underseige. Look at itthis way: by 1970, most British households had been blessed with a TV. No more sticky seats in gloomy theatres, children were now free to pepper their viewing with as many distractions as they wanted. The ‘box' didn’t care (it knew its strengths), but generations of toilet trainees were dismissed at the push of a button. The puppet show, technically interior and ever-so-demanding, was in trouble. The answer came through a change in emphasis. Unable to wage waragainst such impossible odds, the puppet show began to explore its potential as an instrument at education. Out went the seaside Punch and Judy stall, and in came a series at professional 'theatre’ companies: live animation, providing not only entertainment, but moral lessons as well. One such group is the Edinburgh Puppet Company. in this, the latest in a long line oi productions, they explore the relationship between the very young and the very old. Jackie is
convinced that her elderly neighbour Is a witch. Along comes grandson Ben, however, and Jackie, now given access to the ‘witch's lair’, sets out to discover the truth about Granny Kettles. The truth is that Granny is just an older version ol hersell, and the show ends on a happy note of reconciliation.
All in all, this production does no harm to the ambitions oi puppet theatre. it has its flaws, and a very young audience did begin to wander towards the end, but its message came out clearly, and the children seemed pleased. (Philip Kingsley)
