ART OF PATRONAGE

Russian Drawings, Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow.

The Bolshevik Revolution oi 1917 not only announced the arrival oi a new social order, it also introduced a new and complementary cultural language. Tension and diversity there may have been, but at least one consideration held the Soviet artistic community together: the cult oi the aristocratic patron was gone. ‘High’ art dissolved into the search lor universal torms.

So what became oi the old ‘White’ culture? What happened to the briein dominant ‘World oi Art’ movement, with its realist tendencies and its emphasis on the theatrical adornment oi the human iigure? And what became oi the patron, the vital ‘other hali’ oi Tsarist cultural lite?

Some clues, at least, are held in the exhibition currently on display at the Hunterian. The Ashmolean collection oi Russian drawings is founded upon the bequests at three emigres, oi whom

the most important is Mikhail Braikevitch. A member at the 1917 Provisional Government, Braikevitch made two collections during his iiletime, the lirst as a wealthy member at Tsarist society, the second as an exile, living out his days in Paris alongside many at his iavourite artists.

The contrast between the two collections is revealing. The iirst can be seen as evidence of a simple preierence ior ‘World oi Art’ realism: a taste for the sensuous reproduction oi society lite, and a revulsion towards the impersonal aesthetics oi the onrushing avant-garde movement. The second shows a similar bent, with artists like Somov and Bakst once again much in evidence, but this time the works have a moribund quality: reproductions, which allowed Braikevitch to remain in contact with a world which had by then passed away.
