In the second part oi the exhibition, the work oi Lorna Bates and Della Matheson is ieatured, iocusing respectively on representations oi sell/other within the lamin album and Asian women whose social reality is that ol existing within ‘two cultures’. Lorna Bates, as daughter, sister, re-photographer oi the tamiiy album, presents images to us which resemble a visual diary oi tamiiy relationships which areboth intimate and challenging, yet investigative and sell-consciously unresolved. To tell the ‘truth’, through reworking tamiiy snapshots, often taken by her lather, would be to reduce the dynamics oi the relationships to a iorm which was static. Rather, Bates’ juxtaposes old snapshots with re-enactments oi the scenes which reveal the passing oi time, the growth oi awareness at gender stereotypes and the skiliul use oi the camera as an extension other imagination ot the ‘iemale gaze’ within her immediate tamiiy, as it was and how it could be in the tuture. Through the pulling together oi lragments oi memory which construct her history and the addition oi images which

Racial sterotypes are both parodied and attacked implicitly, in images oi Asian women living in Scotland, by Della Matheson. Despite the problematic nature oi her pbsition as an outsider and the ditiicuities oi representation which result trom this, she has created images which challenge the attributes oi the stereotype — overly iertile, ‘exotic other’, wealthy, sexually oppressed - against the background oi the reality oi racism within the city and the tensions Iorced upon marginalized groups ior whom acceptance and identity become a process oi negotiation. For women, oppression is both on the basis at race and gender, as illustrated in the photograph oi a young black woman wearing Western dress sitting beneath a batik oi a hail-naked indian dancer. Her gaze is assertive and coniident, assimilatlng yet retaining her ditierence with autonomy. images at black women allowing their control can bopeiully disrupt the hegemony oi the dominant group. Following this, Della Matheson’s work engages with some oi these ditiicuities. (Lorna Waite)
