Disability can be a harmful social stigma—communication is olten hard and recognition at the real abilities oi the handicapped even harder. Tommy Sutherland and Malcolm MacPhee have such learning difficulties, and both live at the Lochaber Centre in Fort William. After being taught the basics in photography, they visited and photographed working people in and

around their area as a project to break down barriers. The result is quite an achievement, and won them an Arts Award ior endeavour and initiative.
Their casual Polaroids ot a worker in his environment, iind the sitter either set against an imposing space, like the priest engulted within the blessed stonework at his church, or placed within a barred and almost
claustrophobic compound, be it oillce, house, shop orstatlon. Social comment may not abound, but smiles are everywhere. Here we are conironted by a series or photographs of ordinary people doing ordinary lobs, taken by two extraordinary men. (Alison Drown)
