Astunning evocation of the steel industry at its height. including an intriguing insight into the world of former steel producing giants Firth Brown. The photographs in the exhibition were selected from some 15,000 plate glass negatives. made between 1920 and 1960. which were found at the Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield.

Anaton Zhigalov and Natalia Abalaltova: Works 1961—89 28 Oct—3 Dec. New Beginnings. The exhibition charts the development of works by two ofthc central figures in unofficial Soviet art since the early Sixties. and documents their lives as artists without official status. Walter Joyce of Glasgow University will deliver a lecture on A Day in the Life of a Soviet Workeron 15 November. which examines life under Gorbachev for ordinary Soviet Citizens.

NATURE STUDY
Step Gallery, Edinburgh
The centrepiece of Derelt Robertson’s exhibition at the Step Gallery is a large, boat-shaped, standing sculpture, ‘Magridin', which first attracted attention, at an earlierstage of development, in this year’s RSA student show. Robertson graduated. from Dundee this summer; his degree show, which was a remarkably coherent and assured installation. centred on a small island in the Tay, exploring both its history and its natural history.
The present exhibition reveals two strands to Robertson's work. He is an accomplished illustrator of wildlife,
faithful to what he sees before him with a textbook accuracy of detail; and this facility underpins (and occasionally inhibits) more imaginative works, strongly and fruitfully influence. by Will Maclean. The ‘Mugdrum’ project,
which includes a livre d'artiste and several small boxes, contains Robertson’s best work to date; it is possible that his development as an artist depends upon his finding a new project to act as a focus for his practice, to prevent his explorations oi text and texture, his use of found objects, from becoming dutiful additions to a meticulous naturalism.
