How Prints are Made Until 17 Dec. The exhibition traces the development ofthe printing ofartistic images from the 15th century to more modern times. Major works are on loan from the Fitzwilliam. Open Eye Gallery. Edinburgh. Ah Florence! The principle centre of Western art lortwo and a hall centuries. The city where perspective was discovered, and scientilic curiosity wedded to the visual arts. A cultural centre rich in its wealth oi artistic history, and a ‘mind-boggling’ experience to Edinburgh artist Jane Hyslop, who has had an incredible time since graduating lrom Edinburgh College at Art with a BA Runs in Painting in June this year. great successes, the latter resulting trom a trip to Florence courtesy oi the John Kinross travelling scholarship. After submitting slides oi her work to the RSA, the award was given on the strength oi her final year’s achievement.
This collection ol reliet prints and drawings certainly rellects her loreign experience; albeit in a typically black and white Edinburgh style. Order in her prints is contrasted with colour-created chaos in her drawings. Small linocuts ol lone birds or snails attempt to locus on one small speck ol the city's artistic chaos. She wanted ‘to take tiny, tiny things that were completely lost among these vast paintings, which in turn were lost in enormous architecture and illustrate them.’ Hyslop finds herself attracted to the ‘naive look of medieval prints.’ Her churches and fields are oi the disjointed perspective and line that ancient maps luse together and by playing with spatial two-dimensional possibilities, she ultimately created her own Firenze. William McTaggart Until 29 Oct. McTaggart‘s early work was influenced by the brilliant colour and detail ofthe Pre-Raphaelites. but he soon evolved an expressive and free manner. disregarding criticisms of sketchiness and lack offinish. Like his contemporaries. the French Impressionists. he became interested in the effects of light and movement; his later work dealt only with the ceaseless movement ofthe Atlantic breakers on West Coast beaches and should not be missed.
Morrison’s Scottish Portrait Award Until 14 Nov. Over fifty portraits have been selected to hang in the downstairs gallery. The winner of this prestigious award was Joyce Cairns. who painted Wedding Breakfast.
