JENUFA
Janacek wrote music oi such intensity and intelligibility lorJenuia that it is difiicult for any production, however ineffective, to lessen its impact. Which
is just as well, for David Poutney’s production is showing every sign of having been around for nigh on fifteen years. It dates from grander, less confident days in British regional opera, and it is difficult now not to be distracted by such devices as huge arthritically flapping shutters in the Kostelnicka’s house or the lugubrious water-wheel marking time with the xylophone in Act I.
When the murdered baby is discovered by mill workers under the melting ice, the chorus ofvillagers rampage around the stage with broomsticks and papier-maché spades, and the production at this all
-... ,3 important emotional climax hovers on the brink of farce.
The music in this perlomance provided more than adequate compensation, even if the translation does not sit quite so happily on the notes as the Czech original. Pauline Tinsley as the Kostelnicka warmed to her part as Act II developed, and with vocal and emotional precision portrayed both the love and fear which
' are to destroy her. Anne Williams-King
(Jenula) sang beautifully, even if she seemed to fire a little towards the end, and both Albedo Remedios (Laca) and Graham Clark (Steva) have fine voices but rather awkward acting styles that in Laca's case seemed somewhat reminiscent of a monolithic Wagnerian giant. (ChristopherJ. Lambton)
