ART & EXHIBITIONS
LIS'I‘
PUBLIC ART
Springburn Museum, Glasgow. When Mark Greer, a frame-maker. recently worked at Springburn Museum he heardthe curatorMarkO'Neill bemoaningtbe lack ofartistic documentation of the area. The immediately pointed O‘Neill inthe direction of his father, James Greer. a respected Glaswegian artist who had executed a series of wood engravings olSpringburn inthe Sixties. The museum quickly took steps to secure a series ofprintsfortheirpermanent collection much to the surprise and delightolJames Greer.
‘The works were exhibited at the time but were never shown en masse.‘ he
‘recalls. ‘I didn‘t live in Springburn butl ' travelled through it regularly on my
way to visit my future wife in Bishopbriggs. When I gazed out ofthe bus the scenes I saw always made a vivid impression on me. In many ways it seemed a very romantic place. full of the vitality of a close knit community. Everything teemed with life: the pubs. the pawnshops, the wee swingparks — eventhe cemetery!‘
Greer, who has exhibited at the RSA. the Print Studio in Glasgow and with
the Society of Scottish Artists. has
recently returned to working with the stark monochrome of the wood
fengravings. although his style is somewhat more expressionisticthan
the figurative depictions of his Sixties work. ‘I like working on the small scale
of wood engravings‘, he explained ‘and ‘it‘s so easy to become burdened with
colour and miss the simple beauty of
blackand white.‘
‘Greer's is a unique record which we never expected to come across.‘ enthuses O'Neill. The engravings offer an atmospheric. detailed glimpse of the old community. about to disappear.‘
The Springburn oi the approaching Nineties shall be very different to that which fired Greer's imagination in the Sixties: he views its future with some trepidation. 'lt's aoont to be transferred: I feel very suspicious of the imminent changes- its such a contrast to that old artisan-based comrnnnily.‘ (Sara Villiers)
