Young Einstein is the brainchild of producer, writer. actor and director Yahoo Serious, and to say that it is the oddest film of the year is probably a major understatement. The film clearly appealed to Australian sensibilities, where it stands third (behind ET. and Crocodile Dundee) in their all-time box-office; it remains to be seen whether British audiences are similarly tickled, but I found it very funny.
Dedicated to the real Albert Einstein, it is a fictional biopic about a naive young Tasmanian genius of that name, who not only discovers the Theory of Relativity (and by extension the atomic bomb) while trying to split beer atoms in order to introduce bubbles into the brew, but also invents the electric guitar (sort of) and rock and roll. The twisting, absurd plottakes the budding genius on an epic march across Australia, has him fall in love with Marie Curie in Sydney, where his epochal formula is stolen by the nefarious Preston Preston, and culminates in a showdown amongst the great scientific figures of the age in Paris.
While the real Albert Einstein‘s ideas are to be found in the midst of all these bizarre goings-on, they are presented with a zany, hugely innocent, often naive sense of fun, which owes as

much to Bugs Bunny and silent era stars Chaplin, Lloyd and Keaton, as it does to the more anarchic strains of contemporary humour. Australia gets sentup mercilessly. and whilethe film bristles with movie parodies and recondite references, it also attempts to make a serious point about the importance ofthe non-conformist in changingthe way we understandthe world, in making the essentially imaginative Ieapto new kinds of knowledge.
Whetheryou find his cornucopia of splendid visual and verbaljokes hilarious orsimpty infuriating will depend very much on your sense of humour. Comedy remains the most subjective of areas, and the most resistant to critical exegesis, but what Young Einstein undeniably possesses is a palpable sense of fun which I found to be quite contagious, even — or perhaps especially—whenlwas most determinedto resistwhatwas being putoveron me.
