Street Level Gallery and Workshop, 279 High Street, Glasgow.
With women being the passive objects of the lens for much of the history of
1 photography it’s about time they
reclaimed the medium. Street Level photography gallery and workshop at the ‘unfashionable' end of Glasgow’s High Street is co-ordinated by Martha McCulloch and Catriona Grant.
’It’s a really good area to be in because there’s a different kind of community here than in the West End,’ says Martha McCulloch. ‘We’ve got high rise blocks up the road and there’s the local community centre.’
Founded by the Glasgow Photography Group with money from Glasgow District Council and the Scottish Arts Council this is the first venue in the city to be devoted wholly to photography. The darkroom is available for hire to individuals and groups and basic and advanced evening courses are due to start in aboutsix weeks.
‘The fees are very reasonable and hopefully some of the people who use the darkroom will end up showing their work in the gallery,’ says Martha.
The opening exhibition is a selection from work entered for the BBC Scotland Phtoography Awards including the winning and runner-up pictures and the best of the rest. The spin-off TV series hosted by Muriel Gray was notable for
STREET LEVEL
the way the competition judges Jo n Bryne, Harry Benson and Colin Ford argued about the merits of the work of individual entrants. Rumours circulated that a BBC Awards Victim Support Group was formed to aid photographers savaged on air.
The inaugural exhibition runs until 1 Oct with an open forum on 30 Sept at 2.30pm. This will be the first of many events. This year's Fox Talbot Award winner Mari Mahrwil talk about her work on 11 Oct and a week later it’s the turn of Roger Palmer of the Glasgow School of Art on ‘The Language of Travel’.
Similarities between Street Level and Edinburgh’s Portfolio Gallery (also operated by two women) are clear. Darkroom space and a proposed bookshop adjoin the exhibition area but Street Level is much larger with possibilities for expansion or contraction of the different spaces depending on need.
Some feminist artists employ photography becuase the medium has been used against women. ‘If somebody’s doing work that’s supposed to deconstruct something they need to use that medium in order to say something about it. . . to get back a bit of space that they’ve lost,’ says Martha McCulloch.
