MUSIC LIST/JAZZ
Renfield Street. 332 1846. 8pm. £9.50. £8.50. One ofthe best songwriters ofthe last ten years. although selfindulgence has cost him a lot of followers over the years. The Live (1980-6) collection does show what a lot he has to offer. though.
I De La Soul Barrowland. 244 Gallowgate. 552 4601. 7.30pm. Among the first British dates for rappers whose Three Fool High and Rising album has received much acclaim. Their live show. however. manages to include too many cliches to make it as fresh as the album.
I Tull Love Fixx Bar. 86 Miller Street.248 2859. 10pm. Free. Heavy competition tonight as to where to go — although I suspect that the Scotland v. France match on TV may cause attendances to suffer.
I Live music Saints and Sinners. 272 Saint Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. Double bill of Edinburgh and Glasgow bands. not yet confirmed.
I Nailan l lalt Bar. 160 Woodlands Road. 332 1210. 9pm. Free. Folky residency.
Edinburgh
I Neil Sedaka Playhouse Theatre. Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm. £1 1. £9. £7. Though he could have been a classical pianist. Sedaka chose the path that led to the Brill Building. and fame asa songwriter and performer himself. Despite dips in his career. he provided hits for decades. like the evergreen ‘Oh! Carol‘. and. though 50 this year. shows no signs ofgoing away.
I Capone and The Bullets Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. I Alto Cirrus. Slurpy Gloop and Presence Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Three bands from Fife tonight. and. although we can‘t speak for Presence. Cirrus and the Slurpies have it in common that they both sound like they‘re probably good bands to get out your box to (though we haven‘t field-tested this theory). The Slurpies turned out a home-recorded. rather hallucinatory LP a couple of years ago. and Alto Cirrus took to the stage like unreconstructed hippies - and proud ofit. I Fiaere Nilssen Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.45pm. Free. See Fri29. I Root Love Pelican. Cowgate . 225 5413. I Seven Eleven Trader Vic‘s. Victoria Street. 225 6569. Free. Blues and rock classics.
