The Magic of Motown with Jimmy Rullin, Edwin Starr and JuniorWalker and The All Stars, Pavilion, Glasgow, Sun 17; Playhouse, Edinburgh, Mon 18. An A&R director at Motown Records once told Jimmy Ruttin, that there would never be a Jimmy Ruttin while there was a Marvin Gaye. The man to whom this thinly-veiled threat was issued uses the anecdote to illustrate ,lhis years with the record company, which he ieels never let him realise his lull potential. ‘But there is a Jimmy Rultin, and Marvin’s dead.’
He was a sex symbol with a string at hits, but was bumped olt the Tom Jones show when it was decided that a raving soulman in a tightjumpsuit wasn't the ideal follow-up to Clodagh Rodgers. A soul singer, as he reminds me, doesn’t get the respect oi a rock artist. As it to demonstrate, he takes umbrage at the biog stating ‘lor some reason Rullin was more popular in England than America’ in the Seventies.
‘I probably do go down better here than in the States’ he continues,“ but it's in the context at how you present it. In the Seventies I concentrated on this market and didn't concentrate on a lot or other places. It was my doing. I couldn’t get anything going in America at one time because Marvin Gaye was on my back. He didn't want certain other people having success. It he didn‘t like other groups and Stevie

Wonder having it, what would he think or Jimmy Rultin? Who is supposedly a sex symbol. . .
Since he lelt Motown in the early 70s, his career has not been particularly high-protile, singles with The Style Council and Heaven 17 (‘a lluke') excepted. A new version ol ‘What Becomes or the Brokenhearted‘ with Ruby Turner, overwhich Rutlin had no control, and the deletion or his records lrom the Motown catalogue, convinced him to put new songs on hold for a while and concentrate on persuading Motown to reissue a digitally-cleaned-up hits LP.
Alan or Chuck Berry and Little Richard, Ruttin has none the less had to temper his enthusiasm lor rock‘n’roll numbers on his current tour with Junior Walker and Edwin Starr, but is put out by people who are contused by his leanings. ‘It you go to Italy you expect to hear people singing opera, it you go to Ireland you expect to hear Irish jigs, so why can’t a black American sing rock’n’roll?’ he asks as he’s about to leave. I swear he hasn’t paused lor breath since he arrived.
