Awatinas, Paisley Arts Centre, Tue 19. Rumillaita, Mitchell Theatre, Glasgow, Fri 15; Calton Studios, Edinburgh, Sat 16.

Bolivia, like Scotland, has its Lowlands and Highlands, firewater, greatwild big-beaked birds and a love of lyrical, melancholy music. Scotland is also acquiring a taste for the Andean variety played on the quena orzampona, chaichas and charango.

Those instruments are no strangers to Cal-Mac ferries and single track roads, and are now commonly appreciated in the tiny halls of Argyll and Wester Boss, as the Bolivian bands return each year on their cultural and commercial excursions from La Paz.

Awatinas play Paisley on Tuesday 19 after a long stint atthe Edinburgh Festival. They put on a very exciting and colourful display, featuring dances and exquisite music from the separate regions of the country, and change costume to suit.

touring Scotland this month is Bumillaita. Their music is the result of an incorporation of both the Incan heritage and the influences of Spanish colonization. This Mestizo music, in local dialects and Spanish, is a powerful and evolving expression at a sophisticated art, the essential spirit and windy evocations of Pan pipe and flute underpinned by warm guitar and insistent charango.

‘Wiracocha’, their recently released lourth British album takes its title from a four hundred year-old melody, but includes such contemporary songs of social concern and political awareness as ‘13 Deuda Externa', orthe External Debt, the crushing weight that Bolivia’s majority of poor has to carry.

Bumillaita's poignant, reflective and uplifting music can be heard in Glasgow and Edinburgh on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 aiter a northern tour which takes them as far as Orkney. (Norman Chalmers)
