I Licence To Kill ( 15) (John Glen. UK. 1989) Timothy Dalton. Carey Lowell. Talisa Soto. Robert Davi. 133 mins. The latest Bond flick has Timbo Dalton once more attempting to act himselfback into the shoes of vintage Connery and a straightforward though rather low-powered narrative drive that involves the credible machinations of nasty South American drug dealer Sanchez ( Robert Davi). As for the lasses. there's ‘l’lain ()ld Bimbo‘ bimbo Soto the Latin playthingof both men. or there's ‘Woman ofthe Eightics‘ bimbo Carey Lowell. who‘s allowed to have a brain and be feisty; sometimes both at once. In other words. the same old routine. only with more gratuitous sadism and an eye-catching truck chase. Glasgow: Odeon. Edinburgh: Dominion.

I Mac and Me (U) (Stewart Raffill. US. 1988) Christine Ebersole. Jonathan Ward. Tina Caspary. 100 mins. Mac is in fact an acronym for Mysterious Alien Creature in this kiddies' adventure that foilowsthe cute little extraterrestrial's earthbound encounters with a gang of four young chums. And yes. it does sound a lot like Spielberg's 57‘. Glasgow: Odeon. Strathclyde: Odeon Ayr,L'C1Clydebank 10, WMR Film Centre.

J; ‘.K‘ .15.; ., Lethal Weapon 2 (15)(Richard Donner, US, 1989) Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Joss Ackland, Derrick O’Connor, Patsy Kensit. 113 mins. With Eric Clapton pounding on the soundtrack, Lethal Weapon 2 dredges up every well worn action movie cliche there is. Stunts stolen irom Indiana Jones, the baddies’ luxury hideout lrom North By Northwest, car chases, comic relief and romantic interest add up to another predictable, and violent, police yarn.

Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) is the Vietnam Vet turned cop - a kind of boy-next-door Rambo with a heart at gold who gives as good as he gets in the ilrepower department. The twist here is that the bad guys are South Airican diplomats dealing in illegal Krugerands. Gravel-voiced Ackland plays their head honcho Arien (Aryan, geddit?) Rudd; O'Connor is his Hitler-quilted henchman.

Gibson, nostrils llaring and guns blazing, is incredibly wooden— hardly surprising when he has to utter lines like: ‘Gotchai’, ‘Freeze, dickhead’, and ‘I'm not a cop now, this is personal!‘ The violence is 01 the comicbook

I Macbeth (15) (Roman Polanski. UK. 1971 ) Jon Finch. Francesca Annis. Martin Shaw. 140 mins. Ever-popular Hollywood remake of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai has Brynncr and co hired to save a Mexican village from the unwelcome attentions of Wallach's bandits. The plot became an archetypal movie narrative with a host of sequels and copies both offical and unofficial. Trivia time: hands up who can name all seven of the desperados. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I Major League ( 15) xtr (David S. Ward. US. 1989) Tom Berenger. Charlie Sheen. Corbin Bersen. 107 mins. The line-up for the Cleveland Indians baseball team includes Berenger as a seasoned catcher hoping that his dodgy knee will last the pace. rookie pitcher Sheen tryingto perfect his curveball and stay out ofjail. and third baseman Bensen. who‘s more concerned with saving his face for television commercials than getting on with the game. Togther this unlikely lot are soon to find their dreams fulfilled by competing in the major league. Very American sports comedy with some sharp

Ward, whose previous credits include an

splatter variety usual to this kind 01 teen ladder and the denouement is pure cornball.

The domestic house comes in for much punishment. From the exploding caravan in the opening chase to the bomb in Riggs’ buddy’s bathroom, the lamIIy home, that symbol of suburban normality, Is underattack.

Why does the machine-gunning at our hero’s shack on the beach shock us so much more than the total destruction of the crooks’ opulent hacienda? For the kids in the audience the sight oI dull, comly coniormity being blown away is a potent reminder at their own rebellion against a stilling home liie. Lethal Weapon 2 is all escapist nonsense 01 course, but nevertheless is a disappointing follow-up to the original. (Kennedy Wilson)

When FBI agent Mike Downey (Modine) finds himselfon the case. things hot up . . .or rather don‘t. because despite the quirky hallmarks of Demmc's off-the-wall irony. so successful in Something Wild and Stop Making Sense. the plot is predictable and slow. and the actors seem dragged down with it.
