I Ferguslle v West of Scotland Meikleriggs. Paisley. 1.15pm.
I itllmamock v Uddingston Kirkstyle. Kilmarnock. 1.15pm. Because there is no promotion or relegation in this league. Kilmarnock will be looking for their first victory of the season simply for the purposes of salvaging some pride.

FOOTBALL Saturday 2
FIRST DIVISION
I Clyde V Ayr United Firhill Park . Glasgow. 3pm. Because the national side are ofro play Yugoslavia on the 6th. there are no Premier Division fixtures this weekend. which means that the smaller teams have an opportunity to grab the limelight. and perhaps good attendances. The question is. though. who supports Clyde.especially since they do have not a ground toeall
their own?
I Albion Rovers v Clydebank Cliftonhill Park. Coatbridge (10mins Coatdyke station). 3pm. Albion have made a reasonably good start following their promotion last season. and Clydebank came close to defeating Ilibs in the Skol
Cup last week. so it's not unreasonable to
hope that this match could be very entertaining indeed.
I Falkirk v Meadowbank Brockville. Falkirk ( 100 yards from Grahamston station). 3pm.
I Morton V Airdrie Cappielow Park. Greenock (5 mins from Cartsdyke station). 3pm.
SECOND DIVISION

Tuesday 5
FIRST DIVISION
I Partick Thistle v Raith Rovers Firhill Park. Glasgow. 7.30pm.
I Clydebank v Clyde Kilbowie Park. Clydebank. 7.30pm.
Following their victory in the Isle of Man Festival during the close season. a resurgent Motherwell. normally reckoned to be relegation candidates. are threatening to play attacking football.
I Rangers v Aberdeen lbrox Stadium. Glasgow (2 mins lbrox underground). 3pm. Over the last couple ofseasons. these two adversaries. when pitted against each other. have played more than their fair share of brutal football. leaving both teams physically and pschologically scarred. No doubt. the players' nerves will be on edge again. but perhaps they will be able to control their more pugnacious inclinations by dwelling on the commercial profile adopted by Rangers‘ in-house catering facilities. lfAberdeen choose to bite back on the culinary front. perhaps they should launch a Sneldersburger.
I Hlbemian v Dundee United Easter Road Stadium. Albion Road. Edinburgh. 3pm. lfChairman. David Duff. honestly believes that Hibs are capable of finishing in the top four by the end of the season . then a victory against Dundee United isa prerequisite for these dreams to be fulfilled.
I SI Mirren V Celtic Love Street. Paisley (5 mins from Gilmour Street station). 3pm. Having offloadcd so many players (and their bib shirt) during the close season. St Mirren look more vulnerable than usual. I Aidrie V Falkirk Broomfield Park. Airdrie. 7.30pm.
I Meadowbank v Forlar Meadowbank Stadium. London Road. Edinburgh. 7.30pm.
Saturday 9
PREMIER LEAGUE I Dunfermllne v Motherwell East End Park. Halbeith Road. Dunfermline. 3pm.
— EUROPEAN SELECTIONS
As witnessed at the recent derby matches, especiallythe Old Firm encounter at Parkhead, that palliative oi the people, opium of the masses, despository for unfulfilled dreams, namely football, is quite definitely back with a vengeance.
It takes on another role as five Scottish teams ready themselves for matches in the three European competitions: the European Cup, the European Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Cup. None of the two-leg first round ties will be without difficulty, with the Rangers' meeting against Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich, perhapsthe toughest oithem all.
In the Cup Winners' Cup, Celtic play Yugoslavs Partisan Belgrade, and in the UEFA Cup, Aberdeen take on Rapid Vienna, Dundee United are against Glentoran and Hibernian play Hungarians Videoton. With Scotland‘s allocation of places in European competition about to be slimmed next year to four teams, and with Hearts and Motherwell showing early form, perhaps three of the country’s five representatives on the continent this year might find this season to be their last in European football for a little whileto come.
Undoubtedly, Hibs are the most vulnerable ofthe five. After an eleven-year absence from European competition, their dalliance might be short-lived if the Hungarians play to their reputed form. With a pedigree which includes reaching the semi-final oi the inaugural European Cup in

season 195 Napoli in the 1967-68 season, the current team are to some extent hostages to the fortunes of their predecessors.
Managing Director, Jim Gray, inevitably believes otherwise. ‘There’s no point in barking back to the 70s,’ he says, “since the club was allowed to lose its success in the late 70s and early 803. We have to regain that and then consolidate it. Even though the squad might still require one or two new players, the team at present are fresh enough to respond to the challenge against Videoton, who are a well-balanced team with two Hungarian and two Yugoslavian internationalists. When Hibernian plays to its potential, it plays well. A performance like that against Hearts in the derby would not be good enough to survive in the Premier League, never mind make progress in the UEFA Cup, but everyone knows that we can play much betterthan that.‘ (Mike Wilson)

I Kilmarnock v Cowdenbeath Rugby Park, Kilmarnock ( 10 mins from Bus station). 3pm. Who would have thought it. Kilmarnock in the Second Division. Very disappointing for a team. who. in season 64-65. won the old First Division championship.
I East Stirling v Stenhousemuir Firs Park. Falkirk. 3pm. A derby match ofsorts. and tell me. are there old steam locomotive engines still situated on the other side of one of the perimeter fenees'.’

NATIONAL LEAGUE
I Glasgow Tigers v Mildenhall Fen Tigers Shawfield Stadium. Ruthcrglen Road. Glasgow. 7.30pm. Mildenhall is perhaps better known for its US Air base. but the Fen Tigers do have the distinction ofbeing the only side in the National League who have two Danes in their side (both from the British League). One. Preben Eriksen. has a reputation for being a little crazy. perhaps in the same mould as Berwick's Rob Grant.
