DAZZLE
Assembly Rooms, 54 George Street. For the seventh year running Dazzel has brought an exhibition of jewellery to the Festival, steadily building up a loyal following. An estimated 10,000 visitors have perused the glass cabinets this year. According to one of the organisers, Tony Gordon, there are a lot more yuppies about than ever before, hence the healthy sales and the inclusion of the purely marketable case of jewellery (you shouldn’t have difficulty finding it).
The collection is variable, with some lovely pieces, though little that is stunning. If it’s innovation and humour you want it would be better to visit their current Glasgow show, the one with edible bodywear and vials of body fluids masquerading as jewellery.
The most vibrant pieces are made of plastic, with some lovely effects using gilding and colour. There are contributions from several fine silversmiths, including Indian-influenced, detailed rings and bold, modern pieces. Pamela Rawnsley’s subtle designs reveal an exquisite use of colour and shape, and John Field is the only exhibitorto take advantage of the textural qualities of wood (see photo). My favorites are the humorous, intricately-worked pieces in the first cabinet, where strange, imaginative creatures lie in suspended animation, waiting loran owner. All the jewellery is for sale, some at very reasonable prices. (Jo Roe)
