Glasgow Green, 10 September.
As long ago as 1986, Bliss were staking their claim to be one at Britain’s most promising new acts, with the release at their debut independent single, ‘I Hear You Call.’ Heralding the wonderful blues/gospel voice at Rachel Morrison, it also showed a band (Paul Ralphes, Chris Baker, Paul Sirett and Roger Askew) who were not atraid to return to traditional values in an attempt to get their music across.
This release on their own label allowed the band to progress to Survival Records lorthe release ot one single, ‘Your Love Meant Everything‘, belore they moved on again, this time to their current home, EMI.
Since joining the major label, Bliss have released a stunning debut album, ‘Loveprayer’, and have taken three singles trom the album to date; re-recorded versions ol the two independent singles and, most recently, a cover version of a Millie Jackson song, ‘How Does it Feel The Morning Alter?’ —theirstrongest claim yet to a chart position.
’It has always been a track that we regarded among the most accessible on the album,’ explained bassist and producer, Paul Ralphes. ‘However, we shied away trom putting it out in the past because it was not our own song, although we have totally changed the chord structure and lyric.
“The song itselt is quite obscure. No one in the band was aware at it, even though Rachel is a big Millie Jackson tan. We used to do a live cover of ‘l'd Rather Go Blind’, but then Ruby Turner did it as a single and we started to look tor another cover. Tim lrom the band, Furniture, made us a tape with several Bliss-like songs on it, and that was where we tound ‘How Does It Feel . . .’
The band’s lack ol initial success in Britain is surprising, but maybe inevitable considering Radio One played their lirst two EMI singles once each, giving Bliss more play when the same songs were released independently. However, things are ditlerent in Europe, where Bliss are not only in the charts, but an established live band.
‘Unlike here, no country in Europe is dominated by one radio station,‘ explains Paul, ‘and in Germany, tor example, people don'tseem to have the same hangups about a predominantly white band playing what is black-influenced music. In Italy, the audiences are just wild, whereas here they are really cool, and I think our naturalness and the rawness ol passions in oursongs is what appeals.“
In Italy, ‘I HearYou Call’ is being used in a Levi’s commercial, and it remains to be seen how quickly Britain will catch up on one of the best homegrown bands of the late Eighties. (John Williamson)
