_ EDINBURGH FESTIVAL
The last weekend of Edinburgh's August blow-out is one of the year’s best in terms oi the quantity and quality oi traditional and folk-derived music.
The Dueens Hall hosts two Friday night concerts by Capercaillie, now established as the most popular of Scotland's electric iolk bands. Their tight, driving instrumental ensemble sound, mixing liddle, accordion and whistle with keyboard and bass is counterpointed by the soaring vocals oi Karen Matheson, one of the very best oi Gaeldom's younger singers.
In many respects their Irish equivalent is Allan. Using acoustic instruments and driven along by a two-liddles-and-ilute engine, they also ieature a spellbinding singer, from the Donegal Gaelteacht, in Mairead Ni Mhoanaigh. With then on the Saturday night, Phil Cunningham and Martin 0' Connor show oii their attack and lluency on the accordion. Playing completely diiterent key and lingering systems, and irom different musical backgrounds in Scotland and Ireland, they both reveal a technical command of their respective instruments that is astonishing.
A revival singer in the sense that she wasn’t brought up in the tradition, Alison McMorland is nevertheless one of the country’s greatest singers oi traditional song, with a mesmerising depth and purity. Living in England now, she gives Scottish audiences a rare chance to hear herwhen she is in concert with Gaelic singer Margaret Bennett in Demarco’s Gallery on the
2nd.
Against this Gaelic hegemony, The Picts reassert themselves on the 1st, wielding the sax and bagpipes oi Dick Lee and Hamish Moore to remind us that it is the late 20th century and there are new ways with old terms.
The Festival blows itseli out late on Saturday night at the Fringe Club where the original iconoclastic cellidh band, Ben Wyvls And The Last Resort, supply straight-ahead Scottish dances and some virtuoso piping irom Duncan McGillivray, and then throw away their sporrans, plug in the stratocaster and get into some serious rock and roll.
