I Ice Age Moshpit. Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. That rarity. a female thrash band.
I The Primevals (TBC) Basin Street. Haymarket Terrace. 337 1006. £1. A powerhouse of a dirty raw Scottish R&B-based band who‘ve never got the profile they deserved. despite a number of releases (including a Strange Fruit John Peel session). I The Beatilul Suit and Kitsch and The Night Set Pear Tree. West Nicolson Street. First of a run of dates (equal billing) for two Edinburgh bands more than worth a trek across town to check out. The Suit's wistful pop has been praised often enough in these pages. and The Night Set are back in action again after a longabsence.

CAROL LAULA
Fixx Bar, 22 August.
‘I was basically the main creative input in everything I was doing, and I wasn’t happy with the way things were turning out,’ says Carol Laula, explaining her recent switch Irom vocalist in Touch to solo artist.
Touch, like Carol's previous band This Perfect Heart, were a good it unluliilled pop act, and the stripping down oi instrumentation lor the current series oi live shows serves to highlight the strength at the voice (never in doubt) and the songwriting.
’l’m a lot happier now that it’s down to me and session musicians, and down to me live as well. I think I outgrew Touch — I wouldn‘t say that it Iailed completely because I progressed a lot as a songwriter during that time.‘
She reckons that the responsibility of being alone on a stage with only a guitar and a voice has greatly improved her live perlormance, something which has been tested by a number oi low key gigs, starting in Kilmarnock back in March, and continuing with a Iew dates supporting the Kevin McDermott Orchestra in England.
The current spate at live activity is designed to co-incide with the release oI an independent single, ‘Gypsy’, which comes out on the Burn label on 11 September. Backed with two other line tracks, the single has been Ilnanced with help Irom the Music In Scotland Trust, and should go some way to achieving its initial objectives: ‘The idea Ior doing a single came about

I Gavin Friday and Phranc Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Perfect timing for Friday. catching all the people who heard how good his show was a fortnight ago. and have been kicking themselves for missing it ever since. A run through Brcl. Weill and Dylan covers. with Friday'soriginals building on the mood ofthe dark. lonesome cabaret singer. Take note. though. he's also very funny indeed. when he‘s not being upstaged by the cellist.

back in March,‘she explains. ‘I had some demo time last year Irom Chrysalis, and I worked at Evenload Studios, where I got on really well. So rather than just go solo, the idea was to go into Evenload and record a single.’ ‘The purpose at the single is purely promotional, in the hope that I will be able to sign this publishing deal, which looks set anyway, and to get the attention at anyone else who wants to give me lots of money. Although it‘s
early days, that has been working In terms olpress andTVand radio.‘ . ‘Gypsy‘ (which is not a Suzanne Vega/ l Fleetwood Mac cover version) coupled with the current series oi solo gigs provides a coniident base Ior a major I vocal talent to go onwards and upwards l to betterthings.
