AMERICAN DREAM
Big Sur‘s last gig was in October 1988 at the Dominion Theatre in London, having just iinished supporting Deacon Blue on a major British tour. Since then, a series ol events have conspired to prevent lurther live performances, although this will change with their appearance at the Fixx in Glasgow on 23 Aug, a gig which precedes some English dates, including an appearance in lronl at at least 15,000 people at the annual Greenbelt FesuvaL
In spite of a quiet year, trontman Andy Thornton is able to retiect on proceedings with a mixture of irustration and optimism.
‘When we came all the tour there were a lot at things that I wanted to sort out,’ he says. ‘Some ol the songs had been in the set tor over two years and were beginning to get a bit tired. We didn't like them any more. So, whatl was doing was basically sitting down and writing our second album, it you like.’
This period at intense writing look up the best part of five months, beiore the search for new band members and summer holidays took them to the present time. The three-piece of Andy, Mil Stricevic and Frank Mciiugh have now been supplemented by guitarist Dominic Ashworth and a session keyboard player.
‘I think we are much more rocky now,‘ explains Andy. ‘We are about 90 per cent a rock band, whereas beiore we used to have much more at a souly
edge. I think the songs that we are doing now are also more direct and compact as well.’
On the verge ol signing a publishing deal with Chrysalis, and with one successful independent single behind them, Andy seems to be pinning his hopes on one particular new song, ‘Miss America’.
‘I think being realistic, we want to get something out by the end of the year. II we don’t have a record deal then we will do another indie, hopelully with some support from the publishers.’
80, ten months alterlheir last gig, Big Sur are still alive, and progressing slowly, with enough positive signs to prevent any desperate measures. Alter all, what would lttake to lorce Big Sur to work with Stock Aitken and Waterman?
