NEW STILL LIFE

Anima Mundl: Still Lite in Britain, Stills Gallery.

According to the almost impenetrable opening essay in the catalogue, ‘the photographic still tile is older than photography: it was its testing ground'. The work in Anima Mundi would doubtless have tested those early still liters. There is an ecological theme to the exhibition, lrom Mari Mahr's inverted, crumbling planet Earth held ieebly together with Sellotape, to Roger Palmer’s ‘TER Ml NAT 1011 1987—1988', a conceptual ode to disappearing forests.

Humankind’s abuse at its environment is seen in Keith Arnatt's colourist ‘Rubbish Tip’ pictures, wherein organic forms (a ghastly twist on Cezanne's lruit), vie with plastic containers and polythene bin liners.

Garry Fabian-Miller's tragi-comic ‘For the Fallen Great Storm, October 1987’ is a reminder of the tree victims of the London parks. His pressed leat images are rellecled in Ron O'Donnell's satirical ‘Tonight’s Star Prize' - a nuclearwarhead made from Bank 01 Scotland 2111 notes.

Special mention must be made oi Sharon Kivland’s thought-provoking and iconoclastic installation and Oladelé Bamgboyé's ioytully artless ‘Vacancy, Afro-Scot Similarities’.

For all Anima Mundi's originality and stimulating variety, one can't help but feel short-changed. The exhibition, a co-production between Stills and the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, moves to Canada in September with many more pictures on show. Sadly, Stills, as ever, is strapped lor exhibition space. (Kennedy Wilson)
