I Wolfsbane Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Raunchy 11M combo from Tamworth. who have the distinction of being the first British group to be signed to DefAmerica. Their first LP for that label. Birds, Booze and Bad Language (they're such nice boys. really). is produced by Mr DefJam himself Rick Rubin.

I The Critter Hill Varmints Fringe Club. Teviot Row. Bristo Square. 2265257 9. One-off Fringe appearance for the Edinburgh band, who play a souped-up bluegrass which it is just impossible not to be drawn into. ()ne ofthe most enjoyable ways available of spilling your pint all over a dancefltior and other people. Should get pretty packed.

I The Rainmates Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.45pm. Free. A Dundee band who made some impression on their few visits to Glasgow last year. With a good vocalist. and the brilliant guitar playing of Chris Marra (on loan front Danny Wilson). a strengtheningofthe songwriting would make them serious contenders.

WAKING UP TO CURRIE

Del Amltrf, Edinburgh Venue Thurs 17, Glasgow MayfairTue 22.

It’s been four years since del Amitri’s eponymous first LP, a pleasing but largely ignored set that came out on Chrysalis’ Big Star offshoot. Tom Verlafne was thanked on the sleeve of that album, but the clean picking and strumming, and the quiet urgency of Justin Currie’s vocals had more in common with the English group James, if anyone, than Television’s guitar wizard. Easy-going but lyrically more sophisticated pop than average, del Amitri played as though fearful of stumbling across a round hole they might slot into, and Currie sang like a man who felt there was more to life than rhyming ‘eyes’ with ‘thighs’.

The del Amitri that has re-emerged to play around the country in support of the new album, ‘Waking Hours’ and single ‘Kiss This Thing Goodbye’ (on ASM), is a substantially different group from before. Drummer Paul Tyagi got his marching orders upon completion of the LP, and new guitarist Mick Slaven supplies much beefier guitar lines than those of yore, adding to the band's more robust and streamlined feel. Whatever, it sounds a much more

immediate, tuneful album.

‘That would be because I'm writing songs on my own now, rather than it

i

being the joint venture it used to be. We ?

used to have this terribly pious manifesto that every song had to be co-written. That was all right, but I think the kind of things you can do

1 l l l

I’ve always wanted to do something more personal, or at least coherent, so that the music and the lyrics are more of the samething.’

Very few of the early songs are played now, but because of the limited success of the first LP they're rarely missed.

‘I was very idealistic when l was a teenager. I still am, but I had this rather foolish belief that when we signed to Chrysalis it was our big break and we’d be playing rock’n’roll forthe rest of our lives. And of course I never considered economic factors to be of any importance whatsoever.’

Although rather nervous of stepping into another Chrysalis situation when the band signed with A&M, he describes the difference between the two companies as ‘fairly staggering’. And what’s more:

‘I just feel that we're being given a chance, and that’s what‘s important. I think everybody should be given a chance who writes songs and makes records.’ (Alastair Mabbott)
