Satellite City will be Cumbernauld‘s second community play and they are on the look out for local people to get involved in all

’l was talking to a director of the Moscow Arts Theatre recently,’ says Forbes Masson, ‘and he had never heard of Laurel and Hardy.‘ To many people that’s like never having heard of Coca-Cola or Henry Ford. And how can you begin to describe a duo whose influence and appeal remains strong several decades alter their time?
No doubt these were questions on Tom McGrath’s mind when he wrote his early play, Laurel And Hardy, and they are certainly questions being milled over by the newly formed Actors Theatre of Scotland as they revive the play lortheir debut production. ‘l’m not a Laurel and Hardy freak,‘ says Masson, ‘but watching them again on video there's a real naive quality. They don't make political points like Chaplin, but when people dismiss them as clowns they're missing a lot. I do think Stan Laurel was a genius.’
The company has been set up by Gerald Ramage to give actors a chance to direct. Hamage himself is directing the first play and has cast Masson as Stan Laurel and newcomer Ronald
llutchins performs Heathcote Williams‘ passionate ecological poems in Edinburgh. the poet himselfgivesa reading in Glasgow of his most recent works. Don‘t miss this one if you can help it. Williams is also making an appearance at the Edinburgh Book Festival on 15 August.

Man Act Trilogy Tue 15—Thurs 17 Aug. Mon 22—Thurs 24 Aug. 8pm. £8 (£5). A much bigger space for Man Act to perform the cycle of three plays first seen together at the Third Eye Centre during Mayfest. Simon Thorne and Phillip Mackenzie have been developing the plays over the past four years. They take an off-beat look at the nature of men from youth to old age and have been revived aftersell-out performances earlier in the year.

Laurel and Hardy Tue 15—Sun 20 Aug. 7.30pm. £5 (£2)/£4 (£1). Forbes Masson and Ronald Simon have formed the
Simon as Oliver Hardy. ‘The play tries to find the real people behind the film characters,’ explains Masson. ‘As Tom McGrath says in his introduction to the play, he hopes he doesn't shatter any images. It's a very vaudeville piece. Stan Laurel had a very interesting life. He was constantly working on scripts andideas!
The company are keeping an eye on Glasgow's planned bonanaza for 1990, that being Stan Laurel’s centenary year and Glasgnw being the city in which he made his first professional stage appearance. Hutherglen Academy, Queen’s Park School and Picard’s Theatre Museum in Argyle Street can all lay claim to their part in the Stan Laurel story. It is just part of a legacy from which Masson can draw, aided of course by his experience in contemporary double-act Victor and Barry. ‘There are a lot of routines lifted from the screen,’ says Masson, ‘and Bonnie and I are working well together.’ (Mark Fisher).
