I Deaches(15) (Gary Marshall US. 1988) Bette Midler. Barbara Hershey. John Heard. Spalding Gray. 124 mins. Two eleven year old girls meet on a beach in Atlantic City and become lifelong friends despite jealous arguments and diverse lifestyles. C.C. Bloom is a loudmouthed actress/singer bound for stardom (not a very taxing role for Midler). while Hershey's Hilary Whitney is a prim moneyed beauty trying hard to resist conformity. Midler makes good work of the star-vehicle script and is ably supported by Hershey. But make no mistake. this overlong female buddy movie is the schmalziest tearjerker you‘ll see in a while. Concert movie shot during the 1987 Franks Wild Years tour. with Waits and the band in stunning form. interpolated with fantasy sequences to tell the story of Frank. chihuahua killer. and dreamer with a song in his heart. I The Big Blue ( 15) (Luc Besson. France. 1988) Rosanna Arquette. Jean-Marc Barr. Jean Reno. 120 mins. Barr and Reno. friends since they were children. are divers competing to reach the most profound depths without the aid of breathing equipment. and also rivalsfor the romantic attentions of Ms Arquette. A commercial smash in its native France. Besson‘s film is a stunningly photographed visual experience in various shades of blue. Even if the plot is a loadof tosh. the dolphins are nice. Glasgow: GF'T.
I The Boal (15) (Wolfgang Petersen. W Germany. 1981)Jurgen Prochnow. Herbert Gronemeycr. Klaus Wennemann. 149 mins. Wartimclife under the ocean wave. seen for once from the German point of view. For all the skill and sincerity which went into it. and despite a number of Academy nominations. this is an overlong and predictably gung-ho offering. which never quite thrills. When Ray Petersen (Hanks) takes a week off work to pester his wife (Fisher). he and his buddies Ducommun and Dern become obsessed with the activities of his new neighbours. the mysterious Klopeks. whom they hound mercilessly.
Dante‘s offbeat anti-racist satire is spoiled by overacting and undrewriting. but Hanks‘ ability with slim material is undeniable. and lends the movie a certain light-hearted charm. Glasgow: Cannon The Forge. Cannon Sauchiehall Street. Strathclyde: UCl Clydebank It).

Glossy Greek locations for this routine international co-production heist thriller. that sees Belmondo and his gang swagging some diamonds and evading the local police chief. Notable car chase though. Glasgow: GFT. I Cocktail (15) (Roger Donaldson. US. 1988) Tom Cruise. Bryan Brown. Elizabeth Shue. 95 mins. Cruise plays a greenhorn inducted into the mysteries of all-action bartending by master cocktail shaker Brown. and before long they have graced the top bars in Manhattan and been signed up to work in the Caribbean. Glossy soaper with risible pretensions to social comment. which must go down asa disappointment from the talents involved. Strathclyde1UClClydebank ll). I Commando ( 18) (Mark L. Lester. When his beloved daughter Jenny is kidnapped asa blackmail gambit to win his cooperation in an assassination attempt. retired colonel Schwarzenegger springs back into action. in a matter of hours he must locate and

an old score. Hardly enough bother to work up a sweat really. Commando is a pure action adventure told with zest and the saving grace of gallows humour. The pace rarely flags and Rae Dawn Chong isa treat as an innocent bystander along for the ride. Patently preposterous but persuasively packaged. Glasgow: Cannon Clarkston Road. I Crossing Delancey (PG)(Joan Micklin Silver. US. 1988) Amy Irving. Peter Riegert. Jerocn Krabbc. 96 mins. Career woman lzzy (Irving) is happily single in New York. when her grandmomma decides to take the matter of marriage in hand. and hires Hannah the matchmaker to get her hitched. The proposed match of pickle vendor Sam (Reigert) does not at first appeal. but gradually hearts melt. and the film moves to a romantic conclusion which sidesteps schmaltz at every turn. and wins through delightfully through strong scripting and sympathetic performances. Rachel Ward and a cast of revived luminaries. 87 mins. Film noir spoof has private eye Martin involved with femme fatale Ward and fiendish Nazi scientist Reiner. Much of the humour stems from the intercutting with actual Forties movies in a device now copied by the adverts for a certain lager. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Dirty Rotten Scoundrels ( PG) (Frank Oz, US. 1988) Steve Martin. Michael Caine. Glenne Headly. 110 mins. In this remake of Bedtime Story. which starred Niven and Brando in 1964. Caine is the sophisticated con-man. elegantly separating the rich from their wealth. and Martin plays the interloper who invades his patch in the Sud de France. The two become allies. then rivals. and finally agree to settle their
