SPANISH DESIGN

Innovative Spanish design has not been in abundance since Gaudi delighted the world with his organic structures, until a recent new wave oi designers began creating products characterised by a ireeiorm style. Spanish design has now become the subject oi much international critical attention, rightly so according to Bill Potter, iounder ol lnhouse, though he admits to a certain exasperation with conservative British taste.
This is indeed an impressive collection. Each piece has something quirky or irregular about it, a marked contrast to the cool, sharp style at the Modern movement and its legacy. Amongst the contusion oi unpacked and unsorted oiects the iirst exhibit to catch my eye is Jorge Pensi’s seminal work, Toledo chair (see photo). The cast aluminium chair, which is extremely comfortable, combines sott curves with a bold metalic presence. Also vying for attention are Lievore's Manolete chair, stiii and high backed and Pensi’s Baden oliice chair, its

annrests at a practical height which it laced square on lend distinct bovine qualities to the object; matador and bull? suggests Potter tentatively. A selection oi Mariscal labrics combining bold brushstroke and colour in iloral and geometric designs iorm part or the collection

The leading architect of early Georgian Scotland, not to be confused with his even more famous son Robert, has his finest work displayed in the form of scale models and original drawings. Between the Jacobite risings of 1715 and ‘45 he designed ambitious buildings for some of Scotland's leading lights.
