SONGS FROM THE RIVERBANK

fig.

The River Detectives. Fury Murry's.

Glasgow. Thursday 20: Calton Studios.

Edinburgh. Friday 21. ‘It I had to

describe The River Detectives. lwould

say that we are a rock and roll band

dottedwithlolksentiment.‘—Danny

D‘Neill otthe RiverDetectives. Scotland's greatest tolksongwriter

Michael Marra pointed outrecentlythat

most Scottish pop and rock bands had strongtolkintluences intheir songwriting. and nowhere can this be seen more clearly than in the case ot The River Detectives. who have just releasedtheirdebutsinglelorWEA. ‘Chains'.

The last time The River Detectives appeared inthis magazine. they were about to embark on a strenuous string otlmainly) acoustic gigsthroughout Scotland. with plans tor working on theirdebutalbum independently betore awaitingthe response otthe majorlabels. This was duly done. and the band endedtheyearbysigningto WEA. and supporting at most otthe majorvenues in Scotland.

‘lthink we gained a Iottrom last year.‘ retlected one hall of the songwriting duo. drummer Danny O‘Neill. ‘With the gigs we kept moving upthewayto biggervenues. andlthink we owe a debt to Runrig tor giving us a chance to be seen in the biggest halls in Scotland. Wetullyintendedto put out the album we recorded at Palladium lastyearitnone otthe majors were interested. because we wanted to record something on our own terms. and see it they accepted it.‘

lnthe endthey did. otcourse. and The River Detectives have since had the chance to improve on the work they

recorded last year. with producer Gavin MCKlHDp atthe helm. The outcome is theirdebut album. ‘Saturday Night. Sunday Morning‘. due tor release on 21 August. and containing versions otthe best ottheirsongstromthe lastthree years. withthe blend olelectric and acoustic pertormances being maintained (lourotthe album's eleven tracks are acoustic). Forthose who have only heard the single. lwondered how representative they feel it is of the album.

‘lthink"Chains" isquite representative olwhatwe aredoing.‘ says Danny. ‘The song is about leaving home. and the bonds around you that exist in that situation. It is also a good song torsummer. although people who don‘tknowthe bandthatwellwill not getthetull picture untilwetour. In Scotland. a lot olpeopleknow about the band because we have done so manygigs. whereasin England we are just another name on a poster or whatever. . .'

Onthecurrentdatesthe band promisingtoremaintruetotheir originaltormatotopeningwithan acoustic setbetore beingjoined bythe band. which currentlyleatures Nick Marriott (bass). Charles Reilly (guitar) and David Pentlandlbacking vocals/guitar) in additionto Sam and Danny. In conclusion. what do they wantto achieve withthe album andthe torthcoming gigs?

‘ljusthopethatthey establish us asa band.‘said Sam.‘andthatthe songs mean something to people. in the same way that my favourite bands' songs mean somethingto me.‘ (John Williamson)
