ILLUMINATING THE ART OF THE PAPERMAKER
Victoria Cassidy, The Printmakers Workshop, Edinburgh. Until 24 June. The language of the illuminated manuscript is the source ior these highly decorated works. Each one is adorned with patterns at gold and silver, some being Iramed by borders oi ornate ioliage. A cast at motiis— insects, honeycombs, IIeurs-de-lys, the sun and moon — is reshuiiled in the composition oi each work.
The basis oi all the works in the show, it appears, is a series oi drawings entitled ‘Fragments oi Manuscript'. However it is only when the artist moves beyond these drawings, and
into printing and painting on to hand-made paper, that hertechnlcal Iacility and sophistication become apparent. Indeed, illuminating the possibilities oi hand-made paper is a sub-theme oi the exhibition. An interesting section at the show is devoted to explaining the techniques the artist has used, and Illustrating the iacilities oi the Glasgow Paper Workshop, where the paper originated. Cassidy uses a range oi materials and plant matter to give unique texture, colour and pattern to the paper she works upon, manipulating them to give some at the works an artlilcial sense at old-age and decay. Like her mediaeval models, she combines this with a constant shitting oi scale and a drawing at parallels between the miniscule and the cosmic. Naturally observed detail is translated into a language that is essentially symbolic. Human beings play an uneasy role in her work, and are shown both bound by nature and rejected or threatened by it: caught between the expulsion irom Eden and a Iinal descent into the jaws oi hell. Indeed as I spent time with the exhibition I iound the surIace prettiness oI the work increasingly giving way to a lasting impression oi conilict and decay. What I could not make my mind up about, however, was whether I was meant to take this seriously or accept the work as merely competent decorative pastiche oi middle-age(s) angst. (Alison King)
