Third Eye Centre. Bun ended. Listed in last iortnight’s edition as ‘Sblldt‘ but now using the name ‘Spildt', (a joke played to try the weary minds of the Third Eye's Publicity Department). this new contemporary dance combination gave an interesting and refreshing debut performance.
The dancers are Marisa Zanotti and Francis Book, the composer Nicky Hind. The trio got together through Zanotti’s and Bock's link with the Laban Centre and Hind's previous artistic encounter with Zanotti during the Third Eye’s New Moves season.
What results is a novel mixture of theatre and dance, skillul and imaginative movement combined with clever use of props, sound track, film and live music.
0f the two pieces, the second, a duet, makes greater use of the assembled theatrical elements. Hind‘s influence is absent but the performance is heavily backed by a good sound track, which ties in very directly with the theme of relationships, and visual imagery which includes a water tank.
Titled ‘Bed 6 Feet, Five Inches, Five Feet’ (dimensions reflecting Dock and Zanotti‘s respective heights) it begins with a man and woman in bed. Standing upright with pillows pinned behind their heads and a sheet covering the lower halves of their bodies the two dancers give the audience a very realistic impression of looking down on a couple as they sleep the night together. We see each move to hold the other and turn away again, and both restlesst altering how they lie as they drift back into deeper, more oblivious sleep.
The night is terminated with the sudden whisking away of the sheet and the couple confusedly finding themselves in water. The sound track of owls and soothing tones becomes urgent and the dancers try to find enough space for themselves in their
Japan‘s most celebrated performers. will be taking a workshop in the style and technique of this traditional theatre form. The stylisation and histrionic tempcrmant of Kabuki make great demands on the actor both physically and vocally and the publicity suggests that participants should have a reasonable grounding in physical theatre or dance. The course costs £65 but 15 bursaries worth £35 are available front the SAC Contact Jean Nicholson on 01-837 5862 for details.

new environment. With movement that is close to mime they push each other to the sides of the tank. Eventually both step out, get dressed and embark on an athletic enactment of a struggle for domination, making bold use of Zinotti's diminutive stature to blow away the usual cliches about male-female relationships. Again and again we see her pin down the towering Bock and the piece finishes with him on the floor. her the proud and upright victor.
Re Call Collect, Zanotti's solo piece using a sound track and live music by Hind. is more mainstream and relies on the abstract imagery of Zinotti's movement to suggest the sudden and flowing ways in which its theme, memory, can play on the human mind. The atmosphere created through the melodious but repetitive piano music and the sounds of what Hind describes as ‘places where memories come alive; (this includes Queen Street Station) works much more subtley.
‘Spildt' - or is it ‘Sbildt’ - hope to come together again. lttheir performance at the Third Eye on Thursday was anything to go by then dance theatre of a type more usual on the continent could soon be an integral part of the British dance scene. (Margaret Montgomery)
