11 your experience 01 Kurt Weill’s music comes irom works such as Threepenny Opera, Seven Deadly Sins or Mahagonny, be prepared tor something dinerent in Street Scene. This is Weill with much or that pungent, hard edge taken all and more in the style oi the American musical oi the 1940s. Literally a slice of tenement liie in a New York street, the opera gives a glimpse into the lives 01 the street‘s motley inhabitants, centering on the Maurrant lamily, who provide the mainstay oi the drama, and ending in tragedy. In David Fielding’s iabulous set, the lively but desperate and depressing goings on at the main scene starkly contrasted against the crumbling, grey decay oi the building next door, a world is created where dreams are certainly possible but the reality 01 escape is something else.
Act I is lengthy, a string 01 musical numbers, some more entertaining than
others, but lacking in pace and, to start with anyway, still and slow. Amongst a host oi characters Mark Beudert’s Sam Kaplan is strong, especially in his Lonely House number, sung, quite simply, lrom lront sta’ge. Moon Faced Starry Eyed, a real Broadway style song and dance number, where the set rolls back to reveal a back drop of New York City, is stunning. Olthe Maurrants, one wonders it Kristine Ciesinki’s at times rather shrill voice is right ior Anna, but she captures the character most powertully and Janis Kelly and Spiro Malas do likewise with Rose and Frank. The team at the three Davids — Pountney as director, Fielding as designer and Toguri as choreographer —with John Mauceri as Musical Director is one which, on the evidence at this production, Scottish Opera has done well to assemble. (Carol Main) Street Scene - Playhouse, Edinburgh, Thursday 22 June at 7.15pm.
