Third Eye Centre, Glasgow, 7—10 June. ‘We’re going to use film, weird synth dromes, tapes of Queen Street station, live piano, a double bed, the lirst one is very abstract, the second one’s about relationships, not with a linear narrative, we fall on top of one another, flatten each other a lot, it’s got a creepy soundtrack', thus Marisa Zanotti describes Re Call Connect and Bed 6 feet, 5 inches, 5 feet— which were both conceived for a dance/music project, commissioned by the Third Eye Centre. Newly-formed Sbildt, the piece’s creators, comprise Zanotti, Francis Bock (another of Glasgow's mere dozen or so professional contemporary dancers) and diverse maestro Nicky Hind; the resultant works, besides being articulate and very powerful, are dissimilartrom just about anything. The solo piece (Zanotti dancing) Re Call Collect was, very unusually, a collaborative effort between the musician-composer and dancer (typically one commissions the other) and consequently is ‘dltferent in style and tone from usual Release stuff' Zanotti explains, ‘we didn't want just all the slow, graceful movements, but tried to put in sharper stuff too.‘ Perhaps this is a result of having recently returned from the Nikolais Louis Dance Lab in New York, to where she had won a scholarship? ‘Maybe my doing a lot of Nikolais-based improvisation has bad influence but this is essentially more fluid, relating to the cohesive theme.‘ The theme is memory, the interlinking of past and present providing the multilaceted environment of the piece. With the duet Bed 6 feet, 5 inches, 5

feet (the numbers reflecting respectively Bock and Zanotti’s vastly different heights) the intention is ‘less to do with dance; it's more about Dance Theatre, even less Release-y', Bock clarifying, ‘it uses props like the double bed we stand on, and deals with aspects of relationships through little scenarios, intended to work like holding up postcards.‘
The eerie soundtrack is virtually contrapuntal to Nicky Hind's melodious piano on Re Call Collect; assembled by Andy Cowton, it is a collage of gritty synth work and grinding cellos overlayed with a sinister voice instructing on ‘how to have a relationship' (from a real record).
Are there any points of reference or common strands with these two works? ‘I’m not sure,’ muses Zanotti, ‘we both like soloists Julia Hamilton and Laurie Booth, and dance companies like Pina Bausch’s (German Wuppertal Dance Theatre) and Charles Cre-anges'. Their diverse influences are indeed discernible throughout these captivating pieces. (Stewart Hennessey).
