JOHN’S TALL STORY

Don‘t adjust yoursets. ‘Blue Peter’s’ newest presenter, John Leslie, really is 6ft4in tall—and he‘sthe first Scot to join the award-winning programme in its 26-year history.

Twenty-fouryear-old John left James Gillespie‘s High School aged 16 to train as a musical instrument technician, but ended up touring Denmark with a mobile disco until in 1987 he started work with Tyne Tees before moving to satellite TV.

He applied forthe ‘Blue Peter' post without even realising it: an anonymous advert in ‘Stage’ simply invited replies from young people willing to climb skyscrapers; preference was given to candidates with a background in journalism. His lack of experience in this field was overlooked on the strength of a video he'd submitted showing his interviews of pop stars. The subsequent audition entailed compiling a 45-second news story, explaining the workings of a radio-controlled car, trampolining and inevitably— making a Christmas card. Five months later, he heard was to succeed Mark Curry who is leaving after three years with the programme.

John's first screened report showed

him ‘bridge swinging’ from a viaduct in Wales (courage, he maintains, is a prerequisite for ‘Blue Peter' presenters); future plans include a visit to the gorillas of Rwanda and a feature on speedway racing. Encouraged to contribute ideas, the programme's 17th presenter is keen to raise its Scottish profile and has already recorded an item on basketball with Murray International Metals: ‘Caron Keating (fellow presenter) advised me to relax and enjoy myself,’ says John, ‘and that's what I intend to do’.
