I Ll Merselllalse (PG) (Jean Renoir. France. 1938) Pierre Renoir. Lise Delamare. Louis Jouvet. 135 mins. Financed by the French unions. this episodic and overlong period piece follow: the 1789 march from Marseilles by a group ofpcasants looking to do their hit forthe revolution. One of Renoir‘s personal favourites. but it‘s lack of pace and few moments of real power make it one ofhis least successful. Edinburgh: French Institute.

I Mean Streete(18) (Martin Scorsese . US. 1973) Harvey Keitel. Robert De Niro. David Proval. 110 mins. Tony’s Bar isthe base for four young Italian-Americans. whose increasingly illegal activities lead to tragedy. Vividly observed character study which combines breathtaking technique with a pervasive sense ofcorruption. Keitcl and De Niro give of their very best. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Midnight Run (15) (Martin Brest. US. 1988) Robert De Niro. Charles Grodin. Yaphet Kotto. John Ashton. 122 mins. De Niro is charming and surprisingly straightforward as an honest ex-cop turned bounty hunter. crossing the country to bring crooked accountant Grodin back from New York to LA sothat he can face charges of embezzling Mafia money. The only problem being that the FBI. the mob. the cops. and another bounty hunter all want their hands on the suspect too.
Focusing on the growing friendship between the two leads as they become reliant on each other in their effortsto escape their pursuers. this is an amiable buddy movie that's also a consistently unpredictable road movie. that just happens to be a quite smart cop movie. Superior Hollywood entertainment. very capably served up and performed. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I The Muppet Movie (U) (James Frawley. US. 1979) Kermit. Miss Piggy. Fozzie Bear. 94 mins. Kermit leaves the Georgia swamp bound for Hollywood, meeting no less than fifteen guest stars. including legends like Bob Hope, along the way. Appealing showcase for Jim Henson‘s flavourful puppetry. even if the songs are strictly dullsville. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I My Stepmother I: An Allen (15) (Richard Benjamin. US. 1988) Dan Aykroyd. Kim Basinger. Alyson Hannigan. 107 mins. Eccentric widowed scientist Dr Steve Mills (Aykroyd) gets hitched to attractive Celeste (Kim Basinger). who just happens to come from another planet. This becomes a source of some concern to his teenage daughter (Hannigan). when dad realises his new partner has never been kissed. and so sets about educating her in the ways of carnal knowledge and all that.
Unfunny and rather sexist high-concept fluff. with Aykroyd as unfunny as usual. only several stones heavier. Director Benjamin's career seems to have suffered a notable slump since the wonderful My Favourite Year. Glasgow: Cannon The Forge. Odeon. Edinburgh: Odeon. Central: Caledonian. Cannon. I The Naked Gun ( 15) (David Zucker. US. 1988) Leslie Nielsen. Priscilla Presley. Ricardo Montalban. 85 mins. Nielsen gets a crack at a leading comic role as Frank Drebin. a disaster prone LA cop assigned to find the men who shot his colleague in a drugs bust. and protect our dear Queen at the same time. while also finding room for romance with secretary Presley.
The makers ofAirp/une here operate on
a similar principle: keep it fast. keepit marvellously dumb. and the comic dividends will eventually flow. Watch out for a great beaver gag and comedy cameos from Arafat. Gaddafi. Gorbachev and the
Queen. Where else would you get all these

I The Name of the 8088 ( 18) (Jean-Jacques Annaud. W. Germany/France’ltaly. 1986) Sean Connery. F. Murray Abraham. Christian Slater. 131 mins. Marvellous medieval mystery with the masterful Connery as a Sherlock Holmes-like sleuth on the trail ofa murderer in the monastery. A convincing historical atmosphere and a BAFTA winning performance from Sean. Glasgow: GFT.
I A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: the Dream Master(18) fl (Renny Harlin. US. 1988) Robert Englund. Rodney Eastman. Danny Hassel. 93 mins. Freddy Krueger returns to slash his way through the dreams of another set of suburban teens. Impressive and imaginative effects almost compensate for inept padding in between. but the spectacle and the humour factor are making the series increasingly popcorn-orientated. See also feature. 1928) Nikandrov. Vladimir Popov. Boris Livanov. 164 mins. Commissioned to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the October Revolution. Eisenstein's film is a pulsating expression of the power of montage. with a succession ofdazzling images and the elaborate use of visual metaphor marking this out as one ofthe Soviet cinema‘s great classics. Even if it is all a bit too much. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Ottl of Order ( 18) (Carl Schenkel. W. Germany. 1984) Gotz George. Rene Soutendijk. Wolfgang Kieling. 88 mins. Four diverse souls. an executive and his former mistress. a young punk. and a mild-mannered accountant with an embezzled fortune in his briefcase. are trapped between floors when a tower block's lift malfunctions. Not bad attempt at a well-worn dramatic chestnut creates both claustrophobia and some tension. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I 0ut01The Dark ( 18) (Michael Schroeder. US. 1988) Cameron Dye. Karen Black. Bud Cort. 90 mins. The improbably-named Cameron Dye plays a freelance photographer on an assignment involving Karen Black‘s telephone sex service Suite Nothings. However. a psycho in a clown suit (the writer maybe?) is backing up the girls and so our hero sets about tracking him down. Sad to see producer Paul Bartel and talented people like Black and Cort wasting their time in a tired slasher pic like thisone. even if it isa well-made one. Strathclyde: AMC Clydebank 11).
I Pelle The Conqueror ( 15) a (Billie August. Denmark/Sweden. 1988) Max Von Sydow. Pelle Hvengaard. lStlmins. Special Mayfest preview of bleak. moving Scandinavian saga that follows a young boy and his grandfather as they emigrate from poverty-stricken turn of the century Sweden to what they hope will be a better life in Denmark. The film has already won the Cannes Palme d'Or and the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. and will return later in the year. Glasgow: GFI‘.
I Les Pones roumantes (U) (Francis Mankiewicz. Canada. 1988) Monique Spaziani. Gabriel Arcand. Miou-Miou. 102 mins. Celeste Beaumont (Spaziani) is a jazz pianist. who records her life in a diary before sending it off to the son she abandoned as a child.‘and as he and his own son explore her past we are returned to the evocative days of the silent cinema. Enjoyable elision of past and present.
