A quick straw poll around the otlice turns up the result that Jon Pertwee is the most pepular Doctor ever. sothe King's Theatre should squeeze in a tew lull houses lor ‘Doctor Who - The Ultimate Adventure'. which runstrom Monday 15to Saturday 20. and in which Pertwee recreates the role that many class as being the linest incarnation oi the renegade Time Lord.
The man himsell gotout oi the habit oi watching it when ‘Worzet Gummidge' started clashing onthe other channel. Butthe stage show is. he assures. a dignitied resurrection lor the character. not a cheap send-up.
‘There's a lot at humourin it. because there has to be lor any stage show. but it’s not to the detriment otthe programme orthe storyline.'he says.
Nor is it the lirst stage adaptation. In the Seventies ‘Who' stalwart Terrance Dicks. who wrote the current production. scripted ‘Seven Days to Doomsday'. a show which was ‘tremendously successful' in London. butwas abandoned when itwas discovered that some at the sets and monsters were too big to take out otthe theatre. ‘The Ultimate Adventure' has the Doctor summoned to Number Ten

betore a crucial peace conlerance takes place. The trail leads. inevitably. to the Daleks. and the Cybermen as well. though it‘s very much the Doctor's show.
Pertwee. who iudgesthat he is oilstage lor less than tour minutes. calls it‘a Boy's Own paper adventure story with a green background'. and i assume at lirst he's talking about the carelully designed laser ellects belore it becomes apparent that he means there is an obligatory ecological bent to the production.
Although tans have grumbled aboutthe choice at actors in the lastiew years. there is still a delinite status that goes with being selected to play the Doctor. He is, allerall. a British institution.
‘I don't think it gives you a status among the cognoscenti ol the theatre. I thinkthe general public might do. but on the other hand the Whovians. the tans at Dr Who. are a culty lot. and they look on itas something rather special.’

I hope you understand that I'm exhausted and I want to go home to bed.‘ Although his other talents may have been obscured by his character parts as the Doctor and Worzel Gummidge, Pertwee has long been a successlul stage actor. utilising his versatile vocal chords lora plethora ol accents in cabaret. and is still an occasional lolk singer. llis CV credits him as a satirist as well.
