BODY BEAUTIFUL

Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh Black. Pumping iron. Muscles. Men. Belgian artist Marie Jo Latontaine pumps contemporary currency into her sculpture. The men with the muscles exercise on a monumental bank 01 videos in a sequence at choreographed editing which sets up visual rythyms calculated to mesmerise and engage. Latontaine has chosen to idealise her man, giving him clean, smooth good looks and an iron heart. He is strong but narcisstic. His body must be well- oiled and tuned in a manner at once sophisticated and raw. He is a fascinating beast, but ultimately boring. Without the Callas accom- panlement and this sleek presenta-

tion he would be nothing.

Next door two men are fighting it out to flamenco rythyms. Latontaine sets them in videos, not in the monumen- tal bank of the body-builders but in a tight, cave-like sculpture, emphasis- ing the physical tension on screen.

Upstairs, large photographic portraits at women in quiet, com- manding community, take up a silent conversation with their eyes. Though women at ditterent race, they strike up a solidarity in expressions of detiance and delense.

Latontaine's art is packaged and sculpted in sophisticated technology as smooth as black oil. It is however, a bloodless and chilly exhibition, disturbingly one-dimensional. (Alice
