Clarinet and big band swing, like piston engined aeroplanes, are sounds redolent oi the 403, the turmoil oi the war years, the optimism of peace. Clarinettist Peter Schilperoort formed the Dutch Swing College in May ’45, and on the 12th, in Edinburgh’s Usher Hall, the world's longest running jazz ouiiit periorrn lortheir many tans, in the company oi the Central Band oi the RAF, playing the music oi the period. Then a week later, the reconstructed Glenn Miller Orchestra touches down in Glasgow, tor a Pavilion concert on the 18th, beiore moving overto the Usher Hall on the 19th.

Britain's leading clarlnettist from the post-war years is not to be leit out. Dave Shepherd, who has the distinction of having accompanied Billie Holiday on her visit to Britain in the early 50$, leads his celebrated Benny Goodman style quintet to Liberty’s, at the Edinburgh Playhouse on the 8th and the Glasgow Society of Musicians on the 9th.

Schooled in music conservatory and the big hands oi Vic Lewis and Dankworth, Kenny Wheeler (see photo), is a trumpet-family virtuoso who has moved through bebop, through iazz/rock and irom tree jazzer to world-travelling prolessional in the company of Keith Jarret, Jan Garbarek or Michael Brecker. To the Queens Hall on the 7th he brings a strong quintet, led by superb tenorlst Stan Sulzmann, in what will be a thoughtiul and exhilarating exposition oi skilled technique and liberated imagination.

a modernist composer and disciple oi Schoenberg, to a militant political songwriter, whose creations in the Berlin at the late 203 and early 3113, and in subsequent exile in the ultimately hostile United States, are as trenchantly relevant today, while our ‘liberal democracies’ are, bit by bit, chipped away. Hamburg-born Dagmar Krause is an internationally reknowned interpreter, in German and English, of Brecht, Weill, and especially Eisler's relentlessly chromatic, dramatically rhythmic welding of music and meaning.
