Alive piece consisting of Stuart MacLeod (vocals, guitar), David McKee
(vocals, bass), John Deas
(keyboards, guitar), Stuart Millar (piano/keyboards) and Jum (drums), the Runaway Trains have been quietly putting together a set of endearing pop songs for the best part of two years, based largely in their hometown of Airdrie.
With three drummers and several names in the interim period, the band's first claim to serious attention came in the form of a demo recorded last autumn at Evenload Studios in East Kilbride, which highlighted a genuine songwriting ability, rather than anything near a definitive product. Subsequent gigs showed the possibilities offered by a sound with its roots deeply in American rock.
‘I think for what was our first real attempt at recording the demo still stands up quite well,‘ said Stuart, ‘but since we have started gigging more regularly the rockier side of what we are doing has become more obvious.‘
‘A live band should sound more exciting than a studio recording, and I don't see why anyone would want just to create the studio sound in a live context. It’s hard to put a label on what we do, but in terms of influencesl would say you are looking at things like R.E.M., The Stones and Tom Petty. I think people in Glasgow tend to find that a bit unusual because we are less safe and a bit heavier than a lot of

Given the dual frontman approach, a a much mooted criticism is that the band still lacks a locus, or a strong sense of identity— something that they are keen to deny: ‘Stuart and I are very different as frontmen.‘ said David, ‘and lthinkthat helps widen the appeal. While the two lrontmen may take a lot of the attention, I think we are striving for each member of the band to develop a strong personality on stage. so that people can focus on the band as a whole ratherthan any individuals.’
For now, while they are still some way short of reaching their full potential as a band, the Runaway Trains are listening to the right things and attempting something which is clearly worthwhile.
‘I would say that we were ready to get signed,“ concluded Stuart, ‘but I think we are still some way all being ready to put out records. We need more time to build a following and get things right, but for now we would just like to be recognised Iorwhat we are doing. And I would like to think thatwe can develop as much in the next year as we have done in the last one.‘ (John Williamson).
