TEOUILA SUNRISE
That friendship, like tyres, has only so much mileage in it is the nub of this latest scrlptwriting/directorial endeavour from Robert (Chinatown, Shampoo) Towne. Dope dealer Dale McKusslc (Mel Gibson) wants out after a ‘long and distinguished career', but loyalty to the big-time Latin American drug smuggler who once saved his lite in a Mexican jail makes him take on one last ‘accounting problem'. Nick Frescia (Kurt Russell) is the police lieutenant who should have put McKussic behind bars long ago but won't because he's an old high school buddy. When poutlng point of contention Michelle Pteitter comes between them, loyalties begin to conflict left, right and centre.
The main problem with Towne’s film is not the confused plot that iollows so much as the lack at any real reason to
proving quite adept at handling the comedy material. Glasgow: Cannon Clarkston Road. Cannon Sauchiehall Street. Grosvenor. Edinburgh: Cannon.

I U2: Rattle And Hum (Phil Joanou. US. 1988) Bono. The Edge. Adam Clayton. Larry Mullen. 90 mins. U2 on their worldwide Joshua Tree tour find
themselves exploring the great tradition of
American popular music as they record with BB. King and a Harlem Choir. before taking a trip to the Sun Studiosin Memphis where Elvis first recorded. Intriguing mix of stirring live footage and intimate documentary capturing a band in transition. though perhaps just a little too much of the former. Glasgow: (iF'I’. I Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (PG) (Robert Zemeckis. US. 1988) Bob Iloskins. Joanna Cassidy. Christopher Lloyd. 92 mins. Los Angeles. 1949. and side by side with the human population live the Toons. the cartoon characters working in the movie business. Animated star Roger Rabbit is worried about his wife Jessica’s faithfulness and hires private dick Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) to keep tabs on her. but this is merelythe prelude to the unravelling ofa conspiracy that is to threaten the lives of all involved. and the very future of Toontown itself. An amazing technical achievement for the credibility with which the cartoons interact with the human cast and stylised sets. this surefire box office winner efficiently spoofs theft/m noir genre while milking its Tex Avery-styled highly physical sense of black comedy for all it‘s worth. Edinburgh: Dominion. Strathclyde: AMC Clydebank 10. IWIIIOI (PG) (Ron Howard, US. 1988) Warwick Davis. Val Kilmer. Joanne Whalley. Jean Marsh. 126 mins. A mystery baby turns up in the land ofthe little Nelwyn people. and one oftheir number has to return it to the adult-sized
care what happens to its lead characters anyway. Asking us to sympathise with an ex-narcotics middleman just because he's a caring lather and knows a good rigatone al quattro tormaggi when he eats one is surely rather dodgy moral ground. Mcltusslc is, after all, still driving a Porsche and keeping his money-junkie ex-wite ln Mercs on the proilts of past shadlness. Not once does the film confront the implications of its hero’s
former career, which it seems to regard
as a bit at a boyish lark. Russell, meanwhile, plays Frescia as a charrnless greaseball. The sexual and psychological tension between the
three lead characters never quite works
either, and it the love scenes succeed in being steamy it’s only because they take place in the hot tub. This tequila sunrise is not intoxicating stutt. (Jane Lamacratt)
land ofthe Daikini. However. the kid turns out to be the little princess whowill save the country from the clutches ofthe wicked Queen.
Would-be blockbusting fairytale epic offers producer George Lucas an opportunity to re-fashion the Star Wars narrative in a setting straight out of Tolkien. The result is not unentertaining. but we‘ve all been here too many times before. Edinburgh: Dominion.
I Wings Of Desire ( 15) (Wim Wenders. W.
Germany .1987) Bruno Ganz. Otto Sander. Solveig Dommartin. Peter Falk. 127 mins. Restless angel Ganz on duty over Berlin takes a tip from American movie star and former angel Peter Falk on the possibilities of crossing over. and folows his mentor‘s path to consummate his relationship with beautiful circus acrobat Dommartin.
Gorgeous black-and-white and an attractively sensitive feel for the people and places of Berlin grace this thematically rich and uncharacteristically optimistic slice of Wenders movie enchantment. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
