SCOTTISH CRAFT CENTRE.
Set back all the road in its own attractive garden towards the loot oi the Royal Mile is the Scottish Craft Centre, this year celebrating its lortieth birthday. in honour oi the occasion, Mary Smith, the Centre's Exhibitions Organiser, has put together a show which after a stay in Edinburgh (irom 18 March) is set to go out on tour across Scotland — the Centre's iirst such venture tor quite a while.
Called appropriately Travelling Time, the exhibition brings together the work oi about halt the Centre's 300 members and includes everything irom sculpture, pottery and jewellery to knitwear. Keeping broadly to the theme oi time, the artists have produced a spectrum oi materials and ideas that give a clear indication oi the health oi contemporary crait in Scotland. A clock set in a shaped piece at wood with two legs attached is called Time Runs Out; a set at tour brooches detail a landscape in Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer; a large stone block teatures a living creature alongside its iossiiized ancestor; a jacket is illustrated with a sundiat and comes complete with its own Greek translation; and there is a muitl-coloured gown designed to turn 30'? than a couple oi heads at a Spring
3 .
With such a gamut ot iorm and style,
Mary Smith‘s loremost problem will be to displaythe ditterent pieces to their best advantage (a problem she expects to avoid in the planned exhibition tor this year‘s Edinburgh Festival ior which theiheme is simply ‘Biack'), but the sheer variety oi approach to the same basic idea promises to be one oi the exhibition’s key strengths. And hopeiully as it journeys to Cleveland. Aberdeen and Kirkcaldy as well as other uncontirmed Scottish venues, the show will draw more attention to the Craft Centre, otwhich it often seems more use is made by tourists than by locals. Alter ioriy years supporting the best in Scottish crait it would be nice it the Centre was more widely appreciated.
