The City's Pictures Until 11 Mar. Just a couple of days left to see all four floorsof the City Art Centre given over to display work from the city's collection. A good opportunity to see what they‘ve got in store. Scottish colourists. contemporaries and topographical views of Edinburgh all have their place in this varied collection. Should Auld Acquaintance be Forgot Until 29 Mar. Eight artists were commissioned by the City Art Centre to take a fresh look at Edinburgh and give their verdict on its face today. Already holding historical. mostly topographical views of the city. the centre continues the tradition ofurban ‘portraiture' using young artists with contemporary views. 'Everyday life likely to disappear in the next few years‘ wasthe target for this particular project.

LAGER THAN LIFE Glasgow School at Art, run ended As the student show opens at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Schlitz design competition closes alter only a week on show at Glasgow School of Art. Despite low public attendance, it appears likely that the beer company will repeat the periormance, this time opening it up to other colleges and giving it a more public airing (they are considering an Edinburgh Festival venue nexttime). Schlitz had asked students to come up with new promotional material for their image-conscious company and the commission brought iorth everything irom three-dimensional graphics, a kind oi jigsaw beermat trom Angela Macallum, to a golden waistcoat by Alistair McAuley gleaming with the Schlitz name. Six Dutch Artists Until 12 Mar. Introducing Rob Scholte. Marlene Dumas, Peer Veneman.1lenk Visch. Han Schuil and Alexander Schabracq. All are young and new to Scotland. Approached by the Dutch government under the auspices of the Contemporary Art Foundation. the Fruitmarket were offered this opportunity to show artists of their choice. This enlightened attitude of central government to the promotion oftheir artists makes the British system (where an Arts Council stands in for a Ministry of Culture. a body which could exert a much more powerful lobby) seem somewhat behind the times. The most spectacular piece in the exhibition — a large cube with neon lights — is sited on the roof ofthe gallery and is a real treat for night walkers. Three sculptors show in the lower gallery with two painters upstairs. There is a cool. reserved quality about the whole exhibition.
From 13 March-l April the gallery will be closed while a large multivisual exhibition is installed to tie in with the Festivalof Science and Technology.
