ATHLETICS
An extra five hundred seats have been installed in the Kelvin Hall forwhat promises to be one of the best indoor meetings ever held in Scotland, as Great Britain take part in a three way contest against the USA and the USSR on Friday 10.
The Kodak Classic will see the involvement of a number of Olympic medallists. While the Soviet line-up has yet to be finalised, major names in the US team will include Antonio McKay— world indoor 400 metres champion — and twice Olympic gold medal winner Roger Kingdom. Running in the 60 metres hurdles, Kingdom will lace stiff opposition, not only from fellow countryman Arthur Blake, who has already won two encounters between the pair this year, but also from Colin Jackson of Britain. Jackson finished second behind Kingdom in Seoul, but as European indoor champion and record holder has the more impressive recent form.
The aforementioned McKay will run against Brian Whittle of Ayr Sealorth in the 400 metres. At half that distance, Britain’s European indoor gold medallist Ade Male should be a firm favourite. In the women’s event, a special invitation 300 metres race has been organised for Sally Gunnell, like Male a European indoor champion. More big names are expected to have been confirmed by the day of the event, tickets for which - £7 adult; £4 child, OAP- are available from the Kelvin Hall (041 357 2525). (Stuart Bathgate)
